Valentine's Day wines

I find it difficult to recommend a single wine for Valentine's Day – one does not suit every manner of marking the occasion. So to help you choose the right wine this month, I’ve picked eight contrasting wines, each appropriate for a different scenario. Pair with a hot date or some indulgent food.
1 First date
It probably depends on who’s paying, but even if it’s you, I still think you should buy the best Champagne you can afford. Fleury Père et Fils Champagne (£34.99, Marks & Spencer) A brilliant organic fizz. Malty, ripe and rich, this comes from one of my favourite growers.
2 The ex-husband
A white with lots of acidity is appropriate here. 2007 Dourthe La Grande Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc, Bordeaux (£6.99, or £5.99 each for two, Majestic) Crisp, slightly smoky Bordeaux white with tangy acidity and gooseberry undertones.
3 Old flame
I’d be tempted to choose something seductive, but not too seductive here. Men don’t tend to like sweet wines, but a few glasses of Port is different. 20 Year Old Tawny Port (£29.99, Marks & Spencer) Mature, wood-aged Tawny with subtle, complex flavours of raisins and figs. Sip in front of an open fire.
4 Anniversary
I’d suggest a bottle of white Burgundy: classy and traditional. Just make sure it’s French, has a hefty price tag and a little bottle age. 2005 Domaine des Gandines Viré Clessé (£14.99, Oddbins) Classic white Burgundy: rich and honeyed with hints of cashew and buttered toast.
5 New love
The excitement of a new relationship demands a fun, unfamiliar wine, so try something new. Even if you don’t like it, you probably won’t notice. 2006 Tesco Finest Denman Vineyard Semillon (£7.99, Tesco) Stunning honeysuckle-scented Aussie white with real purity and elegance.
6 Bridget Jones
If you’re having a night in on your own, why not treat yourself to something delicious? Pinot Noir is the closest wine comes to the smell of male pheromones. 2008 Morandé Pionero Pinot Noir (£5.99, Co-op) Soft, supple, with raspberry fruits and a touch of vanilla oak. It might not make up for the absence of Colin Firth, but it’s a great drink.
7 Passion
A brilliant dessert wine is what you need. Rather than a fortified wine (too much alcohol can douse passion), choose something with lower alcohol. 2005 Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Sauternes (£8.99 per half bottle) Honey, crème brûlée and vanilla dominate this sweet white.
8 Romantic night
If you’re going to drink pink Champagne, this is the ideal scenario. But buy something delicious – after all, you’re the lucky ones. Alexandre Bonnet Brut Rosé Champagne (£20.99, Waitrose) Great-value pink fizz from an under-rated producer in the Aube, this is light and refreshing with a dry, raspberryish finish.
