The Wimbledon Royal Box is where so many famous faces including the likes of Kate Middleton and Prince William watch the tournament’s matches unfold.

From Kate Middleton’s best Wimbledon looks to the history behind strawberries and cream, Wimbledon has given fans plenty to enjoy alongside some truly unforgettable tennis matches over the years. The Royal Family have regularly cheered on the likes of Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams as they battled their way through the rounds. Now, as tennis enthusiasts discover how to watch Wimbledon 2022 and which iconic stars are playing, Mike and Zara Tindall have arrived to watch Day 2.

This leaves the matter of when and if their fellow royals will go on to appear during the fortnight. But what is the Royal Box at Wimbledon, who sits there, and which other royals might fans expect to see at the championships this year?

What is the Wimbledon Royal Box?

The Wimbledon Royal Box is located on the iconic Center Court and has 74 seats reserved for use by guests and royals alike. It’s been used since 1922 and has a smart dress code, with suits/jackets and a tie for men, whilst ladies are advised not to wear hats to avoid obscuring the view of the people behind them. Back in 2003 it was decided that the tradition of players bowing or curtsying to the Royal Box when entering or leaving Center Court was to be discontinued. However, there are two exceptions to this - when the Queen or Prince of Wales are attending.

Who sits in the Wimbledon Royal Box?

Not just anyone can watch the tennis from the Wimbledon Royal Box! Instead, this is reserved for both members of the extended Royal Family and honored guests of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. As revealed by Wimbledon, this year the invitations from Chairman Ian Hewitt reflect the Club’s desire to recognize those who provide brilliant public service and whose achievements are inspiring and a source of gratitude as they work to make the world a better place.

Famous faces who’ve been spotted in the Wimbledon Royal Box already include Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, Vadym Prystaiko, the Queen’s cousin Prince Michael of Kent and TV hosts Richard Osman and Alexander Armstrong.

Which royals could attend Wimbledon this year?

It's not been confirmed which royals will definitely be attending Wimbledon 2022, with the only royals to arrive so far being Mike and Zara Tindall. However, as the Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and an avid tennis fan, the Duchess of Cambridge is certainly expected to be amongst the royals heading to watch this year’s tense matches.

Kate Middleton has excited fans with her attendance in previous years and has held her prestigious role as patron since 2016, taking over from the Queen herself. It’s therefore likely that the Duchess will be returning to the Wimbledon Royal Box during the 2022 tournament.

Prince William is also no stranger to the All England club, having attended regularly alongside Duchess Kate, especially on final days. In light of this, it’s expected that he could also make a return appearance at Wimbledon 2022. Meanwhile, other royals that have been glimpsed attending Wimbledon previously include several more of the Queen’s grandchildren, many of which could perhaps cheer the players on from the Royal Box once again this year.

Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi excitedly watched the Ladies Semi-Final last year, as did Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Zara and Mike Tindall, who have now made their first appearance at Wimbledon 2022, have also attended in the past, though they have been known to watch the action from the stands and not the Royal Box.

When might we see the Royal Family at Wimbledon 2022?

Sadly for anyone hoping to get some serious inspiration from Kate Middleton’s dresses or to see some sweet interactions between members of the Royal Family, it’s not yet known when specific royals could attend the remainder of Wimbledon 2022. Instead, it’s understood that any announcements regarding royal appearances are made the day before - or even the day of - their arrival at the club. Some, like Zara and Mike Tindall, might not even necessarily make an announcement at all.

However, that doesn’t mean that fans don’t have a few hints about when senior royals such as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge might show up this year. Looking back at other Wimbledon championships, it’s likely that if Kate Middleton follows the patterns established in previous years then she could watch the Ladies Final from the Royal Box this year.

The Duchess has attended this final regularly, including in 2018, 2019 and 2021. She also returned for the final day of Wimbledon and saw Novak Djokovic in action in the Men’s Final.

Having watched the Men’s Final himself back in 2018 and 2019, Prince William instead accompanied his wife to watch the Ladies Final in 2021. But his history of watching these two events, in particular, could perhaps indicate that he might potentially make another appearance at one of them at Wimbledon 2022.

But it’s not just the semi-finals or finals that could see the royals heading for the Wimbledon Royal Box. In 2019, Kate Middleton made an appearance on the second day and as members of the British Royal Family it could be that some royals choose to coordinate their attendance with the matches of some iconic British stars at Wimbledon 2022.

Perhaps the two most instantly recognizable British stars taking to the grass courts this year are two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu, who won the US Open in 2021. Emma faces Caroline Garcia in the second round, while Andy Murray will play against John Isner in his second match, both taking place on June 29.

The royals have been prominent supporters of the talented players and the Queen and Kate Middleton congratulated Emma Raducanu when she became the first British woman in 44 years to win a Grand Slam title.

The Duchess of Cambridge and Emma even played a game of tennis together at a homecoming event after the US Open. Kate could perhaps be keen to see Emma in action later in the competition if she continues to make her way through the rounds.

Ultimately, whilst it’s not yet known exactly when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge or any of their fellow royals might grace the Wimbledon Royal Box, it could be that they wait until later on in the competition and keep an eye on British talent as they decide on which days they might attend.
