Sophie, Countess of Wessex has been tested for coronavirus after kicking off her royal tour in South Sudan, where the royal will be promoting women’s rights.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex has been tested for the coronavirus after she landed in South Sudan to carry out a royal tour on behalf of the Queen.

Her Majesty’s daughter-in-law, who is married to the monarch’s youngest son Prince Edward, landed in the North African country earlier this week and was met with a thermometer to check whether she had any symptoms of the worldwide virus.

Very pleased to welcome HRH The Countess of Wessex to South Sudan today, to support Women’s participation and efforts to prevent and address gender based violence,’ wrote Her Majesty’s Ambassador to South Sudan Chris Trott on his Twitter feed.

He then revealed that the royal had been tested when she landed, adding, ‘Like everyone else her first meeting was with a thermometer! #SSOT’.

During her time in South Sudan, the Countess will be promoting women’s right and attempting to tackle the gender-based violence that goes in the country.

The area is currently recovering from a civil war that took place back in 2013, which caused at 400,000 people to lose their lives.

The difficult time saw women being targeted by fighters from rival groups.

Countess Sophie will meet with women who have previously survived attacks, to hear about the ongoing challenges that they still face and learn about they were impacted by the conflict.

Ambassador Chris re-shared a photo of the royal meeting with a group of women in the country, with the post captioned, ‘Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex pays a visit to SSCC and meet with a group of women from the Women link to discuss women’s role in peace building in South Sudan and the role of the Church in preventing GBV’.

Let’s hope the stays safe from the virus while away on her travels.
