Timothée Chalamet has taken to social media to share a sneak peek of himself in costume as Willy Wonka for an upcoming film and fans are divided about this new look.

Timothée Chalamet has made a huge name for himself by starring in amazing period dramas such Little Women and The King. The star has also shown his versatility in recent years, as well as starring in coming of age films such as Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird, the actor is currently starring in a science fiction film titled Dune which is in cinemas now.

Despite his impressive career at such a young age, fans are already talking about Timothée's next exciting project which will see him take on an iconic role that was once portrayed by the likes of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. The actor will be playing Willy Wonka in an imagined prequel to the events of the beloved Roald Dahl novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Timothée shared an image on social media of himself in his full Wonka costume. In the caption of the Instagram post the actor quoted Oscar Wilde and Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka as he said, "The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last ...🏭WONKA🍫"

Fans were very impressed by the actor's costume and many found the star more attractive than ever as the iconic chocolate maker.

"Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka is my new favorite thing" said one fan. "ME?? OBSESSED??? with Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka???? YESSS," said another.

Although some fans were very into this look, others couldn't help but notice the star's similarity to other characters. One Twitter user pointed out that he looked quite a bit like Abraham Lincoln in his new top hat, another said that he looked a lot like Gonzo as Charles Dickens in the Muppet Christmas Carol.

The second image in Timothée's post was a close-up photo of the cane carried by Wonka in the new film. The cane appeared to be decorated with a purple present box that was neatly wrapped with a red ribbon and had a button on the top of it.

Timothée's inclusion of this image suggested to fans that this cane could be important to the upcoming series. However, in true Wonka fashion, the actor could simply be leaving a red herring for fans that adds to the excitement and mystery around the upcoming film.

The first actor to play Willy Wonka in a film was Gene Wilder who played the character in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

In 2005, Tim Burton remade this film as a musical fantasy film that featured Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket.

This film also created a backstory for Willy Wonka and focused on his characterisation as well as the normal narrative of the original novel. In this retelling, it was imagined that Willy Wonka has an abusive dentist father and his hatred of his father led to his passion for sugar and chocolate.

Like the 2005 film, the new sequel for the series will focus on Willy Wonka's character and will look at the journey the chocolatier took to becoming the man with the golden tickets.

On Wednesday 11th October, the star was snapped in costume in Lyme Regis, in the South East of England where Warner Brothers are currently filming for the movie.

The film will be produced by Warner Brothers who have revealed that there will be several opportunities to hear Timothée sing and dance as the film includes a variety of musical numbers.

The film is not set to be released for at least another year and Warner Bros suggest that it could be as far away as March 2023.
