Netflix confirms good and bad news about The Crown's next season

Netflix has confirmed a sixth series of The Crown.

The streaming service has confirmed that royal-based favourite The Crown will be returning for a sixth series, but revealed that it will be the last of the show.

'News from the palace: we can confirm there will be a sixth (and final) season of @TheCrownNetflix, in addition to the previously announced five!' Netflix wrote on Twitter.

'So to summarise,' added Netflix, 'we’ll have one more season with Queen Olivia Colman, before she passes the crown to Imelda Staunton. We’re just half way through! Lovely.'

The news comes just months after Netflix had said that the show will end after series five, as showrunner Peter Morgan changed his mind on when he wanted it to end.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons," said writer and creator Peter.

However, he has reiterated that the extra season won't mean that the storyline will come close to the present-day, just that the team can give the show the detail that it deserves.

"To be clear," added Peter, "Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day – it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

The sixth and final season is expected to go as far as far as the early 2000s, but there's no word yet on what storylines viewers will see.

“The Crown keeps raising the bar with each new season," said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original content.

"We can’t wait for audiences to see the upcoming fourth season, and we’re proud to support Peter’s vision and the phenomenal cast and crew for a sixth and final season”.

Fans are on their edge of their seats waiting for season four to hit screens later this year.

It will be the second season with Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman playing Queen Elizabeth II, after taking over from season one and two actress Claire Foy.

Back in January, it was revealed that Harry Potter star Imelda Staunton will be taking over the role from Olivia when it comes to season five - we wonder if she'll carry on into season six...
