Meghan and Prince Harry ‘stepped back’ as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020 and moved their family to their $14 million Santa Barbara mansion in California. Although they moved away from the Royal Family, the couple has continued some of the unusual traditions that Prince Harry and other members of the family grew up with.
Prince Harry and Meghan are both referred to as Mama and Papa by their children. This was revealed in their Christmas card from December 2021 which read, "Happy Holidays. This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet, to the world. Archie made us a 'Mama' and a 'Papa', and Lili made us a family."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Christmas card showed that instead of calling their parents 'mommy and daddy' or 'mother and father' they opted for 'mama and papa' which is a common theme within the Royal Family.
This royal tradition has been shown on many occasions. Prince Charles called his father the Duke of Edinburgh 'papa' and this was revealed after Prince Philip's death at age 99. Prince Charles broke his silence on 'dear papa' Prince Philip in a heartfelt speech as he said, "My dear Papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him."
Prince William and Kate Middleton's children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, also call their father 'papa'.
In 2021, Kate Middleton revealed the kids’ heartbreaking Mother’s Day tribute to their late grandmother, Princess Diana and the children wrote about their 'papa'. "Dear Granny Diana. I am thinking of you on mother’s day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love Charlotte xxxxx," said Princess Charlotte in her adorable message.
It seems that although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be across the pond, they are still continuing some of these unique royal traditions that the Royal Family holds dear.
