I usually prefer slimmer down jackets - but this 70s-inspired retro Fjällräven coat looks so good, I had to make an exception
Comfortable, warm and with timeless good looks, the Fjällräven Expedition Pack Down Anorak pairs as well with hiking boots as it does with jeans
With great looks and fit, I feel like the queen of the mountains when I'm wearing Fjällräven’s Expedition Pack Down Anorak – even if I'm just wearing it to the supermarket. This gorgeous retro jacket is versatile, warm and built to last you for years.

Why you can trust Woman & Home
Most of Fjällräven’s down jackets are giant, bulky affairs that are designed for Arctic conditions, but the Expedition Pack Down Anorak is lighter and more versatile, living up to the Swedish brand's motto of "functional, durable, timeless".
I actually got this pick of the best down jackets for an 11-day trek in the Himalayas, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's only for serious exploits. The fun, retro style and lighter design make it great for any time outdoors. I quite often find myself pairing it with a chunky headband, my favourite walking shoes, and some workout leggings for coastal strolls, campfires at the beach, and even running to the supermarket.
The looser, boxy fit and throwback high collar is designed to be stylish, but the design also makes it really easy to pull on and off and wear over other layers. It's a warm but fairly light down jacket that's more than earned its spot in our guide to the best down jackets for women.

What are the best features of the Fjällräven Expedition Pack Down Anorak?
Based on a 1974 design, the Expedition Pack Down Anorak is designed specifically for women, and it shows in the fit and style. Many of the women’s down jackets I've tested are cut too slim to work well for layering, but the Expedition has a lovely boxy fit that allows for layers over and underneath, and doesn’t allow heat to escape – perfect.
The hem is easy to adjust with a cord hidden inside the pocket, and a side zip makes for easy on/easy off. I love the giant, cosy hood and high collar, which are both warm and flattering.
The hand-warming pockets are actually one big pocket, so there's an internal pocket to help me keep track of my phone. The kangaroo pouch is so big that I can easily stash my gloves and anything else I want in there, and I can get away with leaving my backpack at home for shorter walks.
The whole jacket actually packs away into the kangaroo pouch, as well, which is designed to give you a makeshift camping pillow. Not everyone will need this, but I've found it is really useful for travelling with kids.

Does the Fjällräven Expedition Pack Down Anorak perform on the trail?
I've tested the Fjällräven Expedition Pack Down Anorak everywhere from the breezy beaches of Scotland all the way up to Everest Base Camp, in both sun and snow, and I really rate its reliable warmth, which makes it comfortable to wear mile after mile.
What sets the best down jackets apart from others is that, while on the whole they're not meant to be rain jackets, they're often treated to keep a lighter rain at bay. I love that when I do wear this jacket in a shower, the water just beads on the fabric rather than soaking through. My favourite down jacket ever, the Rab Microlight Alpine Women's Down Jacket, does this perfectly, too.
It's definitely too warm for summer hiking (I'd recommend my Montane Alpine Nano 850 for that), but the half-zip at the front and side zip do make for some good venting, and anywhere you want some protection from the chill, it's there for you.
Though the shell fabric can sometimes be quite flimsy on down jackets, this one is made to hold up over time and against rubbing backpack straps.
I was recently wearing it for a car camping trip to Scotland's Galloway Forest Park when I ran into a photographer wearing the very same jacket. We spent about 10 minutes telling each other all the things we love about it, even though we obviously didn't need convincing, and I think that tells you all you need to know about this jacket.
The side zip makes it really easy to take on and off
The w&h verdict on the Fjällräven Expedition Pack Down Anorak
If weight and size are at an absolute premium for you, you might want to pick a more pocketable jacket, but otherwise, I reckon the Expedition Pack Down Anorak is a great middleweight option.
I love the retro look of the jacket, inspired by Fjällräven’s first down coats, designed in the 1970s, but it has remained timeless in terms of style.
