Have you got a grand ball pencilled carefully in on your calendar this year? If not, you may want to consider organising one yourself, because someone has to wear these gowns to some sort of occasion. Or at least dream about it.
From Versace to Valentino, this week fashion’s most elite designers gathered to showcase their show stopping creations for the biannual Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris. And this season was as high octane and extravagant as ever. There were gowns with drama, others with romance, some with glamour and some were downright flamboyant. But that is what Haute Couture fashion week is all about. Money is no object, and wearability doesn’t come into the picture. Haute Couture is about dream like dresses that look like they’ve landed straight out of a fairytale. And who doesn’t enjoy a one of those every now and again? With models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner gliding skilfully down the catwall and a smattering of celebrities watching very closely, it was indeed a lavish occasion.
Haute Couture translates into French simply as ‘high sewing’. And that’s exactly what it is. The dresses are crafted from expensive, unusual fabrics, and are made especially for particular clients – usually actresses or aristocrats. Well known starlets can often be seen gracing the red carpet in custom made Haute Couture gowns. And the term itself is not used lightly. It is protected by law and can only be adorned by designers who get the stamp of approval from the ‘chamber syndicale de la haute couture’ – the regulators who determine which fashion houses are eligible to make a Haute Couture collection.
