As the memorial service for Prince Philip approaches, new details have been shared by Buckingham Palace.
The memorial was first announced by last December, in a statement which read, “The Queen has agreed that a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh will take place in the spring of 2022 at Westminster Abbey.”
Now, it’s been revealed that the service will be broadcast on television in the UK on BBC One, with coverage beginning at 10.30am BST, and the programme is expected to run for an hour and 45 minutes.
Representatives for the Palace have said the service will "give thanks for the Duke of Edinburgh's dedication to family, Nation, and Commonwealth and recognize the importance of his legacy in creating opportunities for young people, promoting environmental stewardship and conservation, and supporting the Armed Forces."
The memorial, which will feature “reading and music close to the Duke’s heart”, is also expected to be attended by hundreds of people. Who will be there?
Will the Queen attend Prince Philip’s memorial?
Yes, Her Majesty will be at the memorial to her late husband.
It’s been confirmed that, despite some health issues of late, the Queen will be attending in person, however, sources have commented that Her Majesty is desperate to block wheelchair photos from being revealed.
It's understood that royal staffers will follow an elaborate plan to ensure that the monarch—who will celebrate the historic Platinum Jubilee 2022 throughout the year—will be able to join the service without being photographed in a wheelchair.
The news follows the revelation that the Queen had a wheelchair-friendly lift fitted at Balmoral Cottage.
Will Prince Harry be at Prince Philip’s service?
Prince Harry, wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, will not be attending the memorial.
A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex has confirmed he will not be leaving his California mansion to attend his grandfather's memorial service, as Harry fears he is not safe visiting the UK.
Is Prince Andrew attending the Prince Philip memorial?
Despite facing a controversial few months, a spokesperson for the Duke of York confirmed Prince Andrew will be at his father’s memorial service.
Andrew has kept a low profile since reaching a settlement with Virginia Giuffre, the woman who claimed she was trafficked to the UK aged 17 by billionaire Jeffrey Epstein and made to have sex with the Duke.
The Duke “absolutely and categorically” denied the allegations and as part of their settlement it was agreed that Andrew would make no admission of liability.
Who else will attend Prince Philip’s memorial?
The rest of the guest list will include most of the royal family.
Expected to attend as reported by various outlets are:
- Prince Charles and Camilla
- Prince William and Kate Middleton
- Princess Anne and husband Timothy Laurence
- Prince Edward and wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex
- Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi
- Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank
- Zara Tindall and Mike Tindall
- Peter Philips
- Prince Edward, Duke of Kent (the Queen’s cousin)
- Princess Alexandra
Various members of European royal families and heads of state have also been confirmed to attend the service.
So far, these include:
- King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain
- Princess Beatrix, King Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands
- King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium
- Queen Margrethe of Denmark
- King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway
- King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden
- Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania and Prince Radu
Also expected to attend are Prince Philip's surviving family members from Germany.
Three of his relatives—Bernhard, Hereditary Prince of Baden; Donatus, Prince, and Landgrave of Hesse; and Philipp, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg—attended his funeral.
In addition to members of the royal family, foreign royal families, and Prince Philip's family and friends, Buckingham Palace announced, "the congregation will include over 500 representatives of The Duke of Edinburgh’s patronages and charities, reflecting the breadth of causes and charitable interests championed by His Royal Highness, and as a tribute to those who continue his work."
In addition, "representatives from UK Government, the Armed Forces and the Devolved Administrations, Realm High Commissioners, representatives of Overseas Territories, representatives from The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Household, representatives from The Duke’s Regimental Affiliations in the UK and the Commonwealth, as well as the clergy and other faiths" will be in attendance.
