Prince William and Kate Middleton's movie premiere date night - but behind the glamour lies a royal dilemma
The couple are going to the premiere of Tom Cruise's new film Digger and it's possible that we'll see them a little more often now
The Prince and Princess of Wales haven't been to a premiere together since Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 and tonight they're once again getting glammed up and walking the red carpet in honour of one of Tom Cruise's films. The couple are attending the global premiere of Digger, which highlights the dangers of an environmental disaster, to support the Film and TV Charity.
However, the event falls during yet another turbulent time for the Royal Family and it's possible there could be slightly more behind their decision to go. According to Woman's Guest Royal Editor Duncan Larcombe The Firm is reportedly "nervous" about what Prince Harry and Meghan could do to "overshadow the working royals' important campaigns".
In the latest issue the royal expert also noted, "Even stepping out on the same day as, say, Kate and William at a separate event will cause a headache for those behind the scenes at the Palace, with (no doubt uncomfortable) stories suggesting they are competing for attention."
This is a dilemma for working royals like William and Kate, who are also well aware that Harry and Meghan are fond of attending big events like premieres, galas and awards. Right now, the Prince and Princess of Wales are choosing to carry on with their engagements as normal and haven't commented on the Sussexes' return.
Additional public appearances could be a welcome reminder that they are the working royals and perhaps going forwards it's less likely that Prince Harry and Meghan will end up being invited to big events like this.
Maybe even in the back of their minds there's a concern that if they don't accept, the Sussexes could get asked? We'll never know for sure but Harry and Meghan moving back to the UK has put the Prince and Princess of Wales in an even trickier position when it comes to direct comparisons being made.
Duncan claimed the "Palace is in turmoil over what to do next" as the Royal Family "essentially sit and wait for the Sussexes' next move".
Prince William and Kate attending the Digger premiere not only makes a public statement and supports an important charity, but will give the Royal Family a positive publicity boost on the same day as Earl Spencer's new book came out.
He's said William and Harry "won't be surprised" by the allegations in Swan Song, but it's made serious allegations about their father. This includes the claim that King Charles sounded "giddily elated" when he called after Princess Diana's death in 1997.
Buckingham Palace responded swiftly to extracts, stating, "While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss."
This new wave of coverage in the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan's return is putting the royals under pressure and Prince William and Kate are two of the most popular family members. Many fans will be excited to see them at the Digger premiere, reuniting with Tom Cruise.
Alongside meeting with him, the future King and Queen are also being welcomed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and senior representatives from the Film and TV Charity.
