Prince Charles’ surprising fact sparked a flurry of comments from fans as he shared sweet pictures from his recent day of engagements on Orkney.
- The Prince of Wales started his caption for his latest post with an intriguing question for fans regarding his royal title.
- It soon emerged that whilst some were aware he undergoes a title change in different places, others were left wondering why.
- This royal news comes as we revealed how Kate Middleton and Prince William are protecting Prince George with a sweet gesture.
This year has seen Prince Charles travel the length and breadth of the UK as well undertaking important overseas tours as senior members of the extended Royal Family continue to step up and support the Queen in her Jubilee year. And the travelling hasn’t stopped there as Prince Charles donned a kilt for several significant engagements in Scotland this month, including meeting local community groups in Wick. His most recent engagements took place on August 8th on Orkney off the north-eastern coast of the country.
Taking to his official Clarence House social media accounts, Prince Charles has shared a series of special snaps from his day on the stunning archipelago. Though it was the caption alongside his Orkney photos which really caught fans’ attention as Prince Charles’ surprising fact sparked a flurry of comments…
“ 🏴 Did you know that The Prince of Wales is known as The Duke of Rothesay when in Scotland?” it asked the Prince’s social media followers.
And the quick question garnered quite the reaction, with some fans quick to declare they did indeed know of this title change for the future King and others left a little confused.
“In fact, we did!” one fan wrote excitedly, before revealing their royal knowledge even more as they asked, “Also, The Duchess of Cornwall is known as The Duchess of Rothesay when in Scotland, right? Hope to see both TRH together again soon ❤️
Another person echoed this, writing, “@clarencehouse Yes I did - and the Duke of Cornwall when he’s here in the Duchy! 😊”.

"I learn a lot about people and their country while following the Duke of Rothesay ( and of course his wonderful wife)”, someone else shared.
But not everyone was aware, with a fourth person writing simply, “No I did not know that. 🧐” as another asked, “Why does he have a different title in Scotland?”
The title of Duke of Rothesay was traditionally bestowed upon the heir to the Scottish throne, in the same way the title Prince of Wales was to the English monarch’s heir. Now it’s another of the dynastic titles given to the heir to the British throne who is first in the royal line of succession as Prince Charles is.
During his trip to Orkney, the Duke of Rothesay undertook a packed day of engagements as he toured Melsetter House and saw the work of remarkable architect William Lethaby.
He also visited YM Hall, Longhope, and was introduced to community groups. This included representatives from the Scapa Flow Museum and Royal National Lifeboat Institution where he discovered more about all they do to support their local community. And the day of engagements ended with the grand reopening of a former Auction Mart, which is now newly refurbished and converted into a magnificent cultural and music venue.
It’s not known how long Prince Charles will remain in and around mainland Scotland. Though with the Queen enjoying her summer break at Balmoral Castle and the Prince of Wales’ Birkhall home nearby on the estate, it’s possible he and Duchess Camilla could stay there and visit his mother.
