On yesterday's red carpet at the National Television Awards, a host of famous faces made their red carpet appearance in a range of spectacular gowns and dashing suits.

Celebrities including Holly Willoughby, Ruth Langsford and Andrea McLean turned up to the glamorous event to collect awards for their respective shows.

Acclaimed actress Suranne Jones was also in attendance, and enjoyed a successful night, scooping the award for Best Drama Performance for BBC series Doctor Foster.

Suranne chose an edgier look for the red carpet, in an androgynous black Giles Deacon suit, paired with a white bow tie and Christian Louboutin heels.

But while her outfit was praised by fashion fans, it was a subtle accessory within her look that caught the eye of viewers.

Whilst posing for photographs, Suranne had noticeably pinned a badge to her sleek blazer, with the sign 50/50 on it. So what exactly does it mean?

The badge is a supportive emblem for the organisation Equal Representation for Actresses, and clearly showed Suranne's support for the recent movement for gender equality - a topic that has recently been hotly debated in the entertainment industry.

Suranne took to Instagram early on Wednesday morning to clarify her reasons for wearing the poignant badge, clearly up reports that it was just a symbol of support for equal pay.

She shared her desire for women to be equal in all aspects, pointing to how fair representation in entertainment can benefit society.

Writing on her social media, she said, "Morning all... just wanted to clear up my reason for wearing my @era50_50 badge in my own words #equalrepresentationforactresses is more than equal pay.

"It's about an equal and fair representation of women in society: better roles: 3 dimensional characters: inspirational stories: showing ALL women represented in a full and inspiring way: More Actresses!! The ratio is 2-1 male to female for adult actors and 3-1 boys to girls in child actors."

She continued, "Representing women from all walks of life can have a big social impact on young women : if you can see it represented on stage and screen you can be inspired by it!

"Stories of women in politics, engineering, science, journalism.. more female writers, directors and DOP's .. please take a moment to find out what 50/50 actually means. Equal pay is just one reason. I wore my badge for all the above reasons: Thank you 💋 @era50_50"

Fans couldn't agree more with Suranne's thoughts, commenting on the post with messages of support.

One wrote, "Here here! 👏👏", while another said, "Well said. So important! Good for you x"

Other celebrities have subtly donned the significant badge in recent weeks, in particular, at the Golden Globes awards ceremony.

Actresses including Emma Watson and The Crown's Claire Foy wore the badge, to show their support for gender equality.
