Martin Compston’s performance as DI Steve Arnott in Line of Duty, has kept us glued to our screens for years, but now he’s given his verdict on *that* divisive finale and shared a surprising pact he’s made with his co-workers.
Martin Compston has spoken out amidst the disappointment from many fans after the Line of Duty Season 6 finale aired. This saw us finally learn the answer to the question that had been plaguing the AC-12 team for years - who is H? - as well as hearing some of Superintendent Ted Hastings’ sayings one last time this year.
And there were certainly plenty of people watching as the BBC reports that the Line of Duty finale was watched by an average of 12.8 million viewers on Sunday night–a record for the already hit show.
Now Line of Duty star Martin has broken his silence following final episode airing, acknowledging it might not be the twist ending that some fans had anticipated.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: ‘Hey folks, now the madness is slightly dying down just want to thank everybody who reached out about last night and the series as a whole, we’ve been truly blown away by the reaction and love for the show we’re proud of it. Fully understand it wasn’t the ‘urgent exit’ type ending some anticipated but we appreciate you sticking with us’.
As one of Line of Duty's three lead characters throughout, Martin went on to share his own response to the dramatic season ending.
‘Felt many emotions from excitement and anxiety at the hype to relief that it’s over. Now I just feel immense pride in our show that started on Wednesday’s on BBC2 has just smashed every overnight drama record since they began.’
The show's huge success might soon lead to a very memorable moment for Martin Compston, co-stars Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar and show creator Jed Mercurio. Martin revealed they’d all made a surprising pact in the event of Line of Duty reaching such dizzying heights…

‘[M]self, Vicky, Adrian and Jed made an agreement in the inconceivable and ridiculous scenario that we ever got twelve million viewers we would get ‘AC-12million’ tattoos. We’ll see who’s good to their word…..’
Following this exciting reveal, there will likely be many fans out there eager for an update on this pact. And it's especially wonderful the show's final episode pulled in such high viewing figures as after years of suspenseful writing and brilliant acting, it’s not yet clear if there will be a Line of Duty season 7.
Though whether or not this will later be announced, there were some fans who seem content with the way season 6 ended.
can we just appreciate how incredible these 4 were? #LineofDuty pic.twitter.com/9owjXA7i9kMay 2, 2021
'[C]an we just appreciate how incredible these 4 were? #LineofDuty', one viewer Tweeted, alongside pictures of Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, Adrian Dunbar and Kelly Macdonald from the finale.
Woke up this morning and I’m still grumpy about #LineOfDuty pic.twitter.com/eSSCMrR9lNMay 3, 2021
Whilst others were less than convinced, with one person commenting: ‘Woke up this morning and I’m still grumpy about #LineOfDuty’.
Everyone in the UK after that ending. Disappointing. #LineofDutyFinale #LineOfDuty pic.twitter.com/RKlTqTdhs9May 2, 2021
But whilst the Line of Duty season 6 finale clearly left fans divided, many will be keeping their fingers crossed for a possible season 7...
