A sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is still a possibility, according to director Donald Petrie

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days fans can rejoice - it looks like a sequel could be on the horizon.

It may be approaching its 18th anniversary, but the Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey blockbuster remains one most beloved romcoms of the 2000s.

The hilarious plotline flipped the classic boy-meets-girl narrative on its side, with protagonist Andi mentally torturing advertising bachelor, Benjamin, over the course of 115 minutes - all for the sake of a work project.

And while a ticket to revisit the dysfunctional couple’s world hasn’t been booked just yet, the possibility of a How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days 2 is still on the table.

"I mean, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is teed up, you know, teed up for one that you could easily do a sequel,” said Matthew, when asked about his thoughts on resuming the role of Benjamin. “And that was a really good one. As far as romantic comedies go, that was a really good one."

Despite starring in countless other productions over the last two decades, the Oscar-winning actor is well aware of the film’s legacy. "People still love that one. I enjoyed that one quite a bit,” he said.

Of course, reviving such a large project is no easy task. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days director, Donald Petrie, is no stranger to the red tape of Hollywood.

“I've heard for years they're gonna reboot Mystic Pizza, and we did that in 1988," he joked to E! News. The esteemed filmmaker isn’t against the idea, though. When considering the potential for a sequel, he said it would all depend on two factors - the script and the cast. Without a well-written screenplay, there is no cast.

"I'd be open to it, but it all comes down to the script, frankly," Donald said. "It would seem to me if I was the studio and I was gonna do a sequel to How to Lose, the first thing I gotta do is lock up the cast. Getting the director is easy, but getting both Kate and Matthew to agree on a script - that's the tough part."

Luckily for fans, it might not be so tough. Like Matthew, Kate has expressed openness to a sequel in the past. The Music star revealed that she often considers what Andi and Benjamin would be up to today.

"I've always thought about what Matthew and I's characters would be now if we were still together," she told InStyle in 2020. "It's actually probably a good amount of time [that has passed] to make a movie about it. We probably would have gotten married with kids. We're probably miserable right now!"

With Donald, Matthew, and Kate all on board for a reboot (sort of), we think it's time to start the petition.
