Before Prince William and Kate Middleton were married, the two broke up for a brief period prompting the Prince’s grandfather, Prince Philip, to comment.

The late Prince Philip was unafraid of saying what was on his mind and was known for his bluntness. Over the years he wasn't afraid to express his true feelings over royal relationships, and that included Prince William and Kate’s.

According to a 2007 report by the Express, royal correspondent Camilla Tominey, revealed how Prince Philip intervened in Prince William and Kate's relationship.

Before the Duchess started preparing to become Queen, Prince William broke up with her in April 2007. It was rumored that William had plans to propose to Kate that month, but instead, ended their relationship with sources claiming he felt too “claustrophobic” in the relationship.

The breakup didn’t last long though as the two got back together in July 2007, which prompted a response from the Duke of Edinburgh.

“After they split up, William confided to his grandparents that he was not sure if he loved Kate enough,” Tominey said.

His grandfather warned him that he “cannot keep stringing along Kate forever.”

Tominey also went on to say that the Queen had deemed a five-year courtship as long enough, and Prince William should either marry her or let her go.

In the end, the two had their fairytale romance as Prince William proposed to Kate three years later during a trip to Kenya.
