Prince Philip reportedly compared newborn Prince Charles to one of the royals’ favorite festive treats after returning from a game of squash to meet his first child.

  • The Duke of Edinburgh is said to have been “matter-of-fact” to the point of “seeming indifference” when he met his eldest son for the first time.
  • Royal expert Ingrid Seward has claimed that Prince Philip compared Prince Charles to a “plum pudding” after he was born.
  • This royal news comes as it was revealed that world leaders sent heartfelt messages to the Queen.

Prince Philip’s eventful life made him one of the most influential members of the Royal Family and the Queen’s husband was known for his direct quips and vibrant sense of humor. Described by the monarch as her “strength and stay”, he gave invaluable advice throughout their decades together and was reportedly still “fascinated and charmed” by the Queen even in the later years. Now it seems that the birth of the first of the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen’s children saw the doting father’s “matter-of-fact” nature showcased like never before.

Writing in the Daily Mail back in November 2017, royal expert Ingrid Seward reflected on the Queen and Prince Philip’s marriage as they marked their 70th wedding anniversary. Ingrid stated that when the then-Princess Elizabeth gave birth to Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on November 14, 1948, she did so without her loving husband.

The birth was reportedly a difficult one, with the Queen said to have had a Caesarean section to deliver her son. However, as was tradition for the era, Prince Philip wasn’t by her side during the birth. Ingrid claimed that he became so “restless” as he paced up and down waiting for news that his private secretary Mike Parker reportedly took him to play a game of squash.

On returning to the Palace after learning that his wife had welcomed Prince Charles, Ingrid stated that he was still in his “sporting flannels and an open-neck shirt” when he held his son for the first time.

Describing Prince Philip as “always matter-of-fact to the point of seeming indifference”, Ingrid alleged that he declared Prince Charles “looked like a plum pudding”.

This delicious dessert is also known as a Christmas Pudding and has long been enjoyed by the Royal Family. So much so that over the years the Queen’s Christmas pudding recipe has been shared by royal chefs so people could recreate its festive flavors at home.  And the Queen’s horrified reaction to her great-grandson Prince George making them has consistently spread Christmas joy amongst fans.

But while Prince Philip comparing their baby son to a Plum Pudding might not sound the most emotional of responses, his love for his wife and their son shone through in the gift he brought the Queen.

Ingrid has suggested that as soon as the Queen came “round from the anaesthetic” the Duke presented her with a “bouquet of red roses and carnations”. This wonderfully romantic gesture certainly showed Prince Philip's thoughtfulness at this momentous time for their family.

Throughout the years, reports have claimed the Queen was also always brought birthday flowers by Prince Philip as he continued to show his enduring love for his wife in small ways over the decades.
