Prince Charles' goddaughter has opened up about the 'scratchy underwear' hand-me-downs from Princess Anne in a new documentary.

India Hicks is the daughter of Lady Pamela Hicks, Lord Mountbatten’s daughter and a close friend of the Queen, and she has taken part in a new documentary that sheds light on what life is like for those who are close to the royals.

In the ITV documentary, My Years With The Queen, both Lady Pamela, and India give viewers and insight into their close ties with the Royal Family and while you'd expect the royals to wear only the best bra and best shapewear, it appears their undergarments were not up to standard.

Speaking about the hand-me-downs, India recalled, “It was entirely practical stuff handed from the Queen to my aunt, to my mother. I remember my sister and I going through the bags. I was the last little recipient of Princess Anne's chill-proof thermal underwear, thank you very much. Actually, I'd like to correct myself. They weren't even thermal. They were wool, and very scratchy.”

India is pictured on the official royal photographs of Prince Charles and Diana's wedding in 1981 and talks about the underwear in the documentary, which is mainly focused on Lady Pamela and her relationship with the Queen.

But India's comments will come as a surprise to many. and it comes after Princess Anne was told to de-clutter her room after sharing a rare snap with fans from her Scottish residence.

Princess Anne turned 70 earlier this year and her birthday milestone was marked with a documentary. And now as the Queen approaches her 95th birthday milestone, a documentary looking at people's relationships with the Queen is set to be aired.

Speaking about the new ITV documentary, India explained it was “great fun” to film.

She said, “While I knew some of the stories, there were other moments where I was genuinely going 'really?!' It was great fun to do. It always is when I get to do something with my mother. She has a real twinkle in her eyes still, and a great spirit.”

The documentary airs tonight, 1st April on ITV and will be available on catch up via the ITV hub.
