The star-studded event, which also saw appearances from Nicki Minaj, Harry Styles and Lizzo, was a chance for the Shake It Off artist to celebrate her three wins and also to announce her new album to fans in person.
The singer, who wasn't cast in the Twilight sequel for this reason, started her speech with how happy she was to win the best video award, saying, "I'm so honoured to have been recognized alongside such amazing artists and directors in this category, and I just want to say I am so heartened by the fact that, for the first time in VMA history, four of the directors nominated in this video of the year category are women."
"We put our entire hearts into this, trying to make something that might be worthy of the love that you, the fans, have shown this song. Thank you for this beautiful indication that we did something right. Love you guys."
However, Taylor, who could also be nominated for an Oscar this year, also went on to surprise fans, "I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand-new album comes out October 21st. And I will tell you more at midnight."

Taking to Instagram at midnight Taylor, who last year celebrated the anniversary of her lockdown album, posted the image of her new album, which has since had 4.5m likes - and simply said "Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at midnight."
Fans in the audience at last night's MTV awards, held in New Jersey, could barely contain their excitement, screaming their delight and cheering. While fans on Twitter were also excited, with many shocked that the singer had finally announced a new album.
One excited fan took to Twitter to say, "I just know Taylor Swift's new album is going to save me. " While another said, "Taylor Swift announcing a new album is exactly the serotonin I needed."
One fan couldn't believe that Taylor had announced it so out of the blue, tweeting, "If you told me an hour ago that taylor swift would announce a new album tonight i would have laughed in your face." Bring on October 21st!
