As the stars prepare for the Oscars 2022, Hollywood’s most prestigious night and an honor many stars and starlets simply dream about, another award show has already taken place—and it’s one award that for many is more of a nightmare.

Despite there being a huge difference in how both awards are perceived, interestingly, in 2022, the common theme running throughout both is none other than Princess Diana.

Whereas Kristen Stewart is nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for her haunting portrayal of the late Diana in the movie Spencer, the much-ridiculed Diana: The Musical swept the board at this year’s Razzie awards.

What are the Razzies and when did they start?

What are the Razzies?

The Golden Raspberry Awards—colloquially known as the Razzies— ‘honor’ the worst offerings the film industry had that year.

Awards are handed out for Worst Picture, Worst Actor, Worst Screen Combo and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel.

How did the Razzies start?

The first-ever Golden Raspberry Awards were held in 1981 and were actually an impromptu, spontaneous thing.

They took place in the living room of a Hollywood publicist, John Wilson.

The good-natured mocking of the film industry quickly picked up buzz, and the unplanned event ended up making headlines.

By the fourth year of the Golden Raspberry Awards, CNN and other major news outlets had started reporting on the event in a similar way to the Academy Awards.

Which celebrities have attended the Razzies?

Sandra Bullock proved she had a great sense of humor as she attended the Golden Raspberry Awards in 2010 where she picked up the award for Worst Actress for All About Steve. (Not for nothing, the night after, Sandra went and won the Best Actress Academy Award for The Blind Side.)

Halle Berry also showed she was a good sport by accepting her Razzie for Catwoman in 2005, famously poking fun of her own acceptance speech when she won the Academy Award in 2002.

Who are the 2022 Razzie winners?

At this year’s Razzies, Diana the Musical won five awards—Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actress, Worst Supporting Actress and Worst Screenplay.

Basketball star LeBron James won Worst Actor for Space Jam 2, Jared Leto picked up Worst Supporting Actor for House of Gucci.
