Drew Barrymore has revealed she hasn't been in an 'intimate relationship' for six years, admitting that she 'needed to stay celibate' after her divorce from ex-husband Will Kopelman in 2016.

The US actor opened up about how her 'view on sex' has changed over the years, taking to her blog on Sunday to share her journey of 'chastity' and motherhood. The candid post comes shortly after Drew Barrymore embraced the 'childhood she never had' with a heartwarming video of her dancing in the rain.

"At nearly 48 I have very different feelings about intimacy than I did growing up," the 50 First Dates star writes. "I was looking for companionship! validation! excitement! pleasure! hedonism! fun! And adventures!!"

Her ideas about intimacy has admittedly been altered, however, by the breakdown of her marriage six years ago. Drew and fine art designer Will Kopelman married in 2012 and have two daughters, Olive and Frankie, together. They divorced in 2016 - an experience that the Hollywood icon would later call 'painful'. Drew has now revealed that the separation made her 'cautious', prompting her to shift her 'focus' to herself and her children.

"I know that does not include a man nor has it for a while," she explained, before adding that therapy has helped her to realize that "Sex is not love" but "the expression of love."

"Since entering life as a single mom, I have not been able to have an intimate relationship," Drew added.

"I have had the honor and a pleasure to actually work on myself and learn what parenting is, again something I was not exactly clear on growing up and I’ve had many learning curves thrown my way.

"I am just in a completely different place in my life and maybe in the near future I will get into a relationship," she continued, "but it simply hasn’t been my priority."

The also confessed that she wishes she had the "chastity and the thoughtfulness" about intimacy as a younger person that she does now "as a 48-year-old woman."

Drew has famously chosen not to share images of Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8, on social media, in order to protect their privacy from the media. Appearing on the Armchair Expert podcast last year, she explained, "I want them to be kids. And I don't put my kids on social media. I'm like a f**king Doberman about them."
