What happened to Isabel Fuentes?

In 2015, 65-year-old Isabel Fuentes was attacked at the home she shared with her husband, Aniceto Rodríguez, in Pazos, in Verín.

Her husband told the Guardia Civil that the attack began as a robbery, and the intruders had hurt his wife, leaving her with a serious head injury.

Isabel was rushed to the university hospital complex in Ourense, in Galicia. She spent the next three weeks largely unconscious, in intensive care - she'd taken several blows to the head with a hammer, leading to damage to her skull and brain.

By the end of April Isabel was well enough to be transferred to a regular ward, and staff are said to have reported that Aniceto was a regular and attentive visitor to his wife, showing the kind of concern expected of a devastated husband.

In the meantime, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack were underway, and police began to be sceptical with Aniceto's account that burglars had attacked his wife, finding no evidence of forced entry at their property.

A hammer had also been found inside Isabel and Aniceto's home. Although it was covered in her blood, there was a lack of forensic evidence tying it to a perpetrator.

Furthermore, police found a dressing gown belonging to Isabel's husband that was covered in blood spatter, which contradicted his claim that he was asleep in another room and unaware the attack was taking place.

During questioning, Aniceto was also noted to have changed his story, with growing holes in his account of what happened that set off alarm bells.

With the investigation pointing to Aniceto being involved in the attack, The Guardia Civil were concerned that Isabel was still at risk while in hospital, and wanted her to be under closer supervision.

It's said that investigators attempted to obtain an order keeping Aniceto away from his wife while he was under suspicion, but a judge rejected this request due to lack of evidence against him.

Further attempts were made to safeguard Isabel, with concern for her welfare mounting. However, urgent warnings to bar her husband from her hospital room were dismissed by judicial paperwork.

Because the incident fell under the label of "robbery with violence" rather than a suspected case of domestic abuse, legal protocols to protect Isabel were bypassed. On May 8, 2015, she was found dead in her hospital bed after suffering fatal stab wounds.

Her husband was in the room, and he was also discovered with serious knife injuries but still alive. He suggested the attackers had returned to kill his wife, leaving him injured in the process.

However, police were able to build a solid case of evidence against Aniceto, and he eventually confessed to attempting to bludgeon his wife to death with a hammer while she slept at their home.

It's believed Aniceto had been very controlling throughout his marriage to Isabel, with years of abuse culminating with the hammer attack.

Prosecutors also found a potential financial motive for his actions. The couple had suddenly married after 25 years of living together, two year before Isabel's death.

Just after the wedding, Isabel changed her will to leave everything she owned to Aniceto’s daughter from a previous marriage, and his grandson.

The year she was murdered, Isabel’s mother had also passed away, leaving her a further inheritance. These details were used during Anecito's murder trial.

When Isabel began to wake from her coma and show signs of recovery, her husband panicked that she'd be well enough to recall everything he'd done, and he stabbed her for reasons of self-preservation to prevent being caught.

Where is Anecito Rodríguez now?

Aniceto Rodríguez died in prison in 2018. In July 2017, he was found guilty of attempted murder and consummated murder, and sentenced to serve 31 years at A Lama prison in Pontevedra, Spain.

While incarcerated, his health deteriorated and he suffered a stroke. On September 21, 2018, he died in the prison infirmary at the age of 78.

Isabel had no children of her own, but had cousins who helped fight for justice for her. Anecito and his daughter were stripped of the ability to inherit any of her estate following his murder conviction, and her assets were instead given to her blood relatives.
