The Britney Spears Netflix documentary is almost here, but what will it reveal about the singing legend?
The Britney Spears Netflix documentary is almost here and fans of the singing icon will no doubt have been wondering what emotional new insights lie in store ever since the Britney vs Spears trailer landed.
The new documentary follows on from Hulu’s shocking Framing Britney Spears, which premiered in February 2021. Netflix's Britney vs Spears will reportedly explore the legal and ethical issues surrounding her 13-year-long conservatorship. The release of this heart-wrenching documentary comes after her father agreed to step down as her conservator. Since she was 26, Britney, whose recent engagement to boyfriend Sam Asghari prompted a warning from one of her celebrity friends, has had her assets and personal affairs under the control of her guardians.
Now the new Netflix documentary looks set to delve deeper into the complexities of the situation and how Britney herself has been impacted. But what is the new Britney Spears Netflix documentary about, what happens in the trailer and when can you watch it at home?
*Warning: spoilers ahead!*
What is the Britney Spears Netflix documentary about?
The new Britney Spears Netflix documentary will explore Britney Spears’ conservatorship. Last month it was reported that Britney’s father would step down as conservator after 13 years, just a month after Britney made the request that her accountant replace him in this role.
Now Netflix's Britney vs Spears is set to explore the legal and moral issues surrounding Britney’s conservatorship.
It will also reportedly include enlightening exclusive content, with considerable research going into the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s official synopsis suggests that Britney vs Spears is the culmination of years of investigative work and will include exclusive interviews and new documents.

“The world knows Britney Spears: performer, artist, icon. But in the last few years, her name has been publicly tied to another, more mysterious term: conservatorship,” the synopsis stated. “Britney vs Spears tells the explosive story of Britney’s life and her public and private search for freedom.”
It continued, “Featuring years-long investigative work, exclusive interviews and new documents, this Netflix feature film paints a thorough portrait of the pop star’s trajectory from girl next door to a woman trapped by fame and family and her own legal status. It shows Britney’s life without utilizing the traumatic images that have previously defined her.”
Britney entered the conservatorship as a temporary measure for six months in 2007. In 2008, when she was 26, the conservatorship became permanent. In recent years, the #FreeBritney movement has gained more prominence, demanding that Britney be given the freedom to control her assets, estate, and business affairs.
With Jamie Spears having agreed to step down as conservator, many fans might still be wondering is Britney Spears free from this arrangement? As of now, the singer’s conservatorship continues and it’s not yet known if a judge will decide to end Britney’s conservatorship altogether.
And as people continue to follow Britney’s journey, this new Britney vs Spears documentary will likely be a highly emotional watch, with the recently released trailer shedding new light on this powerful project.
Watch the Britney vs Spears trailer
Streaming giant Netflix has now released the first explosive Britney vs Spears trailer and it promises some seriously heart-wrenching and shocking moments to come. Opening with a shot of Britney performing, the poignant first words uttered in this trailer come from the singer, who declares simply, “I just want my life back”, over the scenes of her on stage.
The Britney vs Spears trailer then goes on to include the voiceovers from people involved in the documentary which are heard over footage of Britney. One such interviewee alleges, “Britney has a fear that her family would barge in and take everything”.
A voiceover then speculates, “What was going on inside the conservatorship and why was she still in one if she was [quote] ‘ok’?”
The trailer then depicts what appears to be the documentary’s director Erin Lee Carr delving deeper into research around the conservatorship and Jamie Spears' position as conservator. This is soon followed by another powerful sound clip from Britney herself as she says, “I’ve worked my whole life. I don’t owe these people anything.”
“No one would talk,” a voiceover then goes on to claim. “Until they did…”
Scenes then seem to show snippets of confidential documents as talk about the conservatorship continues and the declaration, “No more lies” appears on the screen.
