Nancy Birtwhistle's simple trick makes dull, scratched glass sparkle – using things you probably already have at home
The cleaning expert reveals how to make scratched glass look like new with a secret ingredient from the kitchen cupboard
If you’ve noticed your glassware starting to show signs of wear and tear - sometimes made even more noticeable in the sunlight - don’t panic. You don’t need to go out and stock up on a whole new set of glasses just yet.
There’s a surprisingly simple hack that can make your favourite wine glasses, highballs and other glassware temporarily sparkling like new. This savvy trick is perfect for those days when you’ve got company coming around and don’t have time to go out and get new ones.
Nancy Birtwhistle, the former Bake Off winner and green living queen, showed how you can quickly remedy scratched and shabby-looking glassware with nothing more than a little touch of coconut oil and a soft cloth.
Explaining that the marks, which can come from general wear and tear or from the dishwasher over the years, are a sign of “sick glass” – which is when it’s become scratched and damaged. Nancy’s quick remedy involves applying a small smudge of coconut oil and rubbing it into the scratches.
It works, she explained, because the oil will temporarily fill in all of those tiny scratches that make the glass look dull and stained.
Once you’ve rubbed the coconut oil in, take a soft dry cloth and polish it thoroughly. As Nancy demonstrates first-hand in the video, the glass that was once notably scratched is now sparkling like new.
Sadly, it isn’t a permanent fix. The scratches will reappear when you wash the glass again, but it’s a great tip to keep in mind for your next dinner party or whenever you notice one of your glasses is not looking its best.
