Why you can trust Woman & Home
We’re no strangers to large pizza ovens in my family. We’ve been running a pizza business that relies on cooking oin commercial models for over a decade, so the launch of the Gozney Dome (Gen 2) XL feels more familiar than most. Whilst many brands are moving towards smaller, cheaper ovens, Gozney included with the Tread and Arc Lite, the Dome XL goes in the opposite direction. It’s built for people who want more space, more control, and better results. For my family, that’s exactly what a serious pizza oven should offer.
It’s also what makes it a contender among the best pizza ovens. Size alone doesn’t guarantee performance, but in this case, the extra capacity transforms how you cook. You’re not just squeezing pizzas into a hot chamber, you’re working with it, managing heat zones, and cooking with intent.
When it launched, news of the Dome XL, the largest model Gozney has ever made, had pizza enthusiasts more than excited. You can cook multiple pizzas at once, or one very large one, but more importantly, you have the space to move, turn, and manage your dough properly. Add to that the hybrid cooking options and you have an oven that goes far beyond the basics.

Who would the Gozney Dome Gen 2 XL Pizza Oven suit?
The Gozney Dome Gen 2 XL Pizza Oven is built for confident home cooks, pizza obsessives, and anyone who regularly cooks outdoors and wants more control over the process.
The extra space makes a real difference. If you’ve ever struggled with turning a pizza in a smaller oven or accidentally caught the edge on the flame, you’ll appreciate what this offers. There’s room to manoeuvre, room to recover mistakes, and room to cook multiple elements of a meal at once.
The Dome XL is not a casual upgrade or a curiosity purchase. It’s for people who care about dough, fermentation, hydration levels, and heat management. It suits those who entertain regularly, cook for groups, and want consistency as much as they want that perfect leopard-spotted crust.
It’s also ideal if you want an outdoor oven that goes beyond pizza. With the size and hybrid fuel options, you can cook full meals, from roasted vegetables and meat to slower, smokier dishes.

If you’re short on space, want something portable, or only make pizza occasionally, this is likely more oven than you need. The size, price, and accessory ecosystem only really make sense if you’re going to use it properly and often.
Unboxing the Gozney Dome Gen 2 XL Pizza Oven
The Dome XL arrives fully assembled, which is just as well given that it weighs 73kg. You’ll need at least two people to move it safely into position. This is not an oven that you tuck away after use. It needs a dedicated space and rewards you for giving it one.
Before you complete an online order, I would strongly recommend buying the stand. It positions the oven at the right working height, which makes a huge difference when you’re cooking multiple pizzas. It’s also far more stable than placing it on a standard outdoor table.
Accessories also matter more than people think. If you’re investing in an oven at this level, you need the right tools to match. A good peel, turning peel, and prep surface are essential. In pizza making, tools directly affect results. The difference between a clean launch and a torn base often comes down to technique, but the right equipment gives you a margin for error.
I’d also recommend a weather cover. This is a long-term piece of kit, and protecting it from the elements will keep it performing consistently. If you want a sneak peek of the other accessories that my family and I swear by, here are my top three:
What is the Gozney Dome Gen 2 XL Pizza Oven like to use?
The Gozney Dome XL is gas-powered as standard, with the option to add a wood-fired attachment if you want more traditional flavour. Getting started is straightforward. Once connected to a gas tank, ignition is instant and controlled via a single dial. It feels much closer to using a premium gas hob than a traditional outdoor oven, which often require more patience.
Before your first cook, you’ll need to run the oven empty to burn off any residue from manufacturing and transit. With the Gozney Dome Gen 2 XL, this took closer to 40 minutes to fully heat due to the increased size. That extra time is worth it, as the oven holds and distributes heat exceptionally well once it’s up to temperature.
The digital display is also really useful for keeping an eye on the oven. It gives you a clear read on temperature and heat progress, which is especially helpful if you’re not used to managing a live fire environment.
If you opt for the wood attachment, the experience changes again. The system is designed to force air under the fire, giving you much more control over airflow than a typical wood-fired oven. For my family, in commercial settings, consistent airflow is what separates good pizzas from great ones, and this setup gets close to that level of control at home.
Do you need the space inside the Gozney Dome Gen 2 XL Pizza Oven?
The size of the oven is where the Dome Gen 2 XL really stands apart. The wide mouth and spacious interior make every stage of cooking easier. Launching, turning, and retrieving pizzas all are all much less pressured with a spacious oven, especially if you’re still refining your technique.
The oven's capacity matches Gozney’s impressive claims. You can comfortably cook one 18-inch pizza, two 12-inch pizzas, or three 10-inch pizzas at once. In practice, this means you can serve multiple people without staggering your cooking, which is often the biggest limitation with smaller ovens.
What is the Gozney Dome Gen 2 XL Pizza Oven like to cook in?
We've been cooking on this since it was launched back in October. We've actually even been working on pizza recipes for our family business in this when we're at home and playing around with recipes and can confirm that the performance is exactly what you’d hope for at this level.
Pizzas cook in around 60 seconds at full temperature, with excellent leopard spotting on the base, a crisp underside, and soft, airy crusts. Toppings cook evenly without drying out, which is often where lesser ovens fall short. We've reheated pizzas by holding them up to the flames the next day and we've slow cooked calzones too. Our favourite use is, of course, whipping up a batch of pizzas, side-by-side for a big pizza feast.
The insulation is also worth noting. The exterior does get warm, but not to a dangerous level during normal use. That said, it’s still a high-heat appliance and should be positioned away from children and pets.
Cleaning the Gozney Dome XL Pizza Oven
Maintenance is relatively low effort for an oven of this size, but it does benefit from good habits. After cooking, you can let the oven run at a high temperature for a short period to burn off excess flour and residue. This keeps the stone clean without needing to scrub it directly.
Ash management will depend on whether you’re using the wood attachment, but it’s straightforward to clear out once the oven has cooled completely. Externally, a simple wipe down and using a cover will go a long way in preserving the finish. Given the investment, it’s worth staying on top of this.
How does the Gozney Dome XL Pizza Oven compare?
Within Gozney’s range, the Dome XL sits at the top in terms of size and capability. The original Dome is smaller and more compact, making it a better fit for those with limited space. It still delivers excellent performance, but you don’t get the same freedom of movement or multi-pizza capacity.
The Gozney Arc, on the other hand, is a more streamlined gas-only option. It heats up quickly and is easier to accommodate in smaller outdoor setups, but it lacks the hybrid flexibility and spacious interior of the Dome XL.
The Dome XL is the most complete and ambitious option. It’s the closest you’ll get to a commercial-style setup in a home environment, especially if you make use of both gas and wood cooking.
Should you buy the Gozney Dome XL Pizza Oven?
The Gozney Dome XL is not for everyone, but it isn’t trying to be. If you’re serious about pizza, cook outdoors regularly, and want an oven that gives you real control over your results, this is one of the best investments you can make.
It delivers on space, performance, and versatility in a way that smaller ovens simply can’t match. For the right person, it doesn’t just improve your pizza, it changes how you cook altogether. Make sure you gen up on where to put your pizza oven in your garden first though: this one makes a serious statement.
