Dyson has a habit of making us look forwards. Every year there's another vacuum promising more suction, smarter technology and a new way to clean your home. But one of the brand's best recent ideas actually looks backwards, giving one of its most popular cordless vacuums an impressive upgrade instead of replacing it altogether.
Nobody would argue with Dyson's place among the best vacuum cleaners. The company practically reinvented the cordless market, but that reputation comes with premium prices. That's why I'm always looking for the sweet spot in the range: the model that gives you the latest engineering without demanding flagship money. Right now, I think that's the redesigned Dyson V10 Konical.
Most people have been talking about the new self-emptying dock, but that's not the feature that won me over. In fact, I'd happily skip it altogether. Buy the vacuum on its own and you get Dyson's newest cleaning technology, including the upgraded floorhead and one-touch controls, at a much more approachable price. After weeks of tackling Labrador hair, endless kitchen crumbs and the general chaos of an old draughty house, it's become one of my favourite Dyson recommendations.

Who would the Dyson V10 Konical Cordless Vacuum Cleaner suit?
The Dyson V10 Konical is ideal for anyone who's always wanted a Dyson but struggles to justify spending close to four figures on the latest flagship. It delivers many of the upgrades found on newer models (the conical multi-floor head, green laser, and button) without feeling like a compromise, especially if you're happy to empty the dustbin yourself. There is an option to upgrade to have Dyson's very first self-emptying dock for another £80, if you like the idea of hands-free cleaning.
I think it particularly suits busy homes with pets or long-haired family members. Dyson's redesigned conical floorhead genuinely reduces hair wrap, so I spent far less time cutting tangled hair from the brush roll than I normally would. If your weekly clean is dominated by pet hair, dust and everyday debris rather than deep commercial cleaning, this hits a really satisfying balance between performance and price.
What is the Dyson V10 Konical Cordless Vacuum Cleaner like to use?
One of the first things I noticed was the new button-operated power control. Previous Dyson models relied on holding a trigger down while you vacuumed, which could become tiring during a whole-house clean. Here, you simply press once to start and again to stop, making it much more comfortable to use.
The new conical floorhead is the another standout upgrade. It's designed to funnel long hair towards the edge, where it's balled up and vacuumed into the bin instead of wrapping tightly around the brush bar. Combined with an agitator brush that works across both carpets and hard floors, I could vacuum with one simple floorhead across the whole house.
Then there's Dyson's brilliantly addictive green laser. It shines across hard floors to reveal dust that you'd never normally spot and once you've seen it, you can't unsee it. My Georgian house isn't an easy place to keep clean, with open fireplaces, draughts and, recently, a very affectionate black Labrador leaving hair in every corner. Even so, the V10 Konical coped brilliantly. Friends commented on how clean the house looked after I'd finished testing it, which is about as good an endorsement as I could hope for.
Alternatives to the Dyson V10 Konical Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
If your budget is tighter still, the Dyson V8 remains one of the brand's best-value cordless vacuums. It doesn't have the upgraded floorhead, laser illumination or newer controls, but it still delivers the lightweight handling and reliable suction that made Dyson famous.
If money is no object and you want every feature Dyson offers—including maximum suction, longer runtime and the latest technology—the Gen5detect is still the flagship to beat. For most homes, though, I think the V10 offers much better value.
If you're open to looking beyond Dyson, Shark remains the obvious rival. The PowerDetect range offers excellent cleaning performance, automatic floor detection and impressive anti-hair-wrap technology, often at a similarly competitive price.
Should you buy the Dyson V10 Konical Cordless Vacuum Cleaner?
Dyson could easily have left the V10 behind as newer models arrived, but updating it instead was a smart move. It feels modern where it matters most: the effortless button controls, excellent anti-tangle floorhead and laser illumination all make cleaning noticeably easier, while keeping the price well below the brand's premium models.
If you're tempted by the self-emptying dock, it's a nice extra, but I don't think it's essential. The real appeal of the V10 is that it gives you much of Dyson's newest and best vacuum features without asking you to pay flagship prices.
