Prince Philip reportedly faced the Queen’s dignified fury after a heated argument with a personal protection officer woke her in the early hours.

Prince Philip and the Queen were married for over seven decades before he sadly passed away at Windsor Castle last month, leaving a “huge void” in her life. After many years together, it's said that the Duke of Edinburgh was still "fascinated" and “charmed” by the Queen. However, it seems, just like most relationships, the royal couple’s happy marriage was not without arguments.
In the aftermath of Prince Philip’s passing more intriguing anecdotes about this extraordinary man have emerged. Perhaps one of the most surprising of these was one shared by Royal Editor and author Robert Jobson in his new book, Prince Philip's Century: The Extraordinary Life of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Robert shared a few extracts during an appearance on ITV’s Royal Rota podcast with ITV’s royal editor Chris Ship and they were certainly eye-opening!
"There was another incident in the book which I found very funny after I spoke to various unnamed sources,” he revealed. "There was a story at Balmoral where if [Philip] was on holiday he was very much on holiday.
"And he was up at 5am, he's a very active character, long before the Queen's pipers woke her up with the pipes. So he starts a huge row with a personal protection officer who was allocated to him and asked him 'what are you doing?'
"He said 'I don't need you, I'm on holiday'."
The Queen and Prince Philip made annual trips to Balmoral, a royal residence that is thought to be one of Her Majesty’s favorites, due to it’s peaceful surroundings. However, things seemed to have been less than tranquil on this occasion as Robert claimed that the Duke of Edinburgh and the protection officer began to argue over keys which the officer walked away with.
Prince Philip is said to have then “erupted” into a full-on argument around 5:30am. This did not go down well with the Queen, though. According to Robert, she made her feelings at being woken up plain-in a typically dignified manner.
“Her majesty opens the window and asks Philip what on earth is the matter. At which point he realises he has overstepped the mark... and he knew there were limits and when the Queen wasn't very happy she only had to say a couple of words and he knew he overstepped the mark,” Robert declared.
It's now understood the Queen will retreat to Balmoral to grieve her beloved husband. The last time the couple spent time there together was the summer of 2020. It’s understood that with the Covid-19 restrictions eased, they received wonderful visits from many of their royal relatives at different points throughout their stay.
This reportedly included Prince William, Kate Middleton and their three children, as well as Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank and the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children.
