Vulnerability does not seem to faze Prince Harry. While appearing on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, the Duke of Sussex speaks candidly about a wide variety of sensitive and personal topics, including mental health and his relationship with Meghan Markle. It’s during this frank conversation that he truly lets his guard down and becomes arguably one of the most relatable royals in history.

• From therapy sessions to keep his mother’s legacy alive, Prince Harry lays it all out on the table during his podcast appearance.

• Throughout the hour-long chat, Prince Harry makes several striking reveals about his family and how his upbringing shaped his identity.

• In other royal news, here is why Meghan Markle's not having a baby shower

Prince Harry is telling his side of the story once more, and it’s definitely worth a listen.

The Duke of Sussex begins his Armchair Expert episode with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman by discussing mental health and normalizing the notion of asking for help.

“Speaking out now, especially now in today’s world, is a sign of strength rather than a sign of weakness,” he says.

The trio touches on Harry’s forthcoming docu-series with Oprah, The Me You Can’t See, which will hit Apple TV+ on May 21. They also speak about Harry’s empathetic outlook, which he attributes to the experiences he’s had while in Afghanistan and participating in humanitarian efforts.

“Everywhere I go, I ask questions, I try to listen,” Harry says.

Though Prince Harry attempts to put everyone else’s needs at the forefront and isn’t afraid to tackle a new philanthropic project (most recently Archewell Foundation’s partnership with Procter & Gamble), he, too, needed to reach out for help.

"Once I started doing therapy, it was like the bubble was burst,” Harry admits. “I plucked my head out of the sand and gave it a good shake off, and I was like, ‘You're in this position of privilege, stop complaining and stop thinking you want something different — make this different — because you can't get out. How are you going to do these things differently? How are you going to make your mum proud and use this platform to really affect change?’"

But his mention of family is not always rosy. Harry admits that in his early 20s, he struggled with his royal identity and feared that history would repeat itself when the time came for him to settle down with a wife and children. His mother’s tragic passing weighs on him heavily to this day.

Despite hardships, he’s paving his own path forward and has wife Meghan Markle to thank for his progress, as she’s the one who encouraged therapy. He even took a moment to joke about one of their first initial dates, where they met up in a London supermarket and had to pretend not to know one another.

“I had a baseball cap on, looking down at the floor, trying to stay incognito,” he jokes. “It's amazing how much chewing gum you see—it's a mess!”

We’re all for his honesty and look forward to seeing what the Duke of Sussex comes up with next. Listen to Harry on Armchair Expert today.
