From making a difference to looking stylish, sassy pink-loving lawyer Elle Woods can handle anything. And so we are more than a little excited about the upcoming third instalment in the popular Legally Blonde franchise.

Now, almost two decades later, we’ve finally been given the news we’ve been waiting for - a release date!

Announcing this exciting news, MGM Studios wrote on Twitter: 'Elle Woods is Back! Legally Blonde 3 coming May 2022. We rest our case. #LegallyBlonde3 #ElleWoods @ReeseW.'

And with actress Reese Witherspoon reprising her role, as well as acting as the film’s producer, we’re expecting big things.

Back in 2018, rumours about a possible sequel seemed to be everywhere after Witherspoon spoke to E! Online and explained she and the rest of the Legally Blonde team have “thought about” bringing Elle Woods back.

She went on to say, “I do think that it’s a good time to do it” and that she thinks “women need that kind of positivity right now.”

Witherspoon then went on to confirm these exciting rumours in typically Elle-style on her Twitter in December 2018. The Hollywood star posted a video of herself floating on a pool lounger. She was wearing a pink bikini and it was accompanied by the words, 'It’s true… #LegallyBlonde3.'

It was then confirmed by Deadline that actress and writer Mindy Kaling and co-creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Dan Goor would be the team behind the screenplay for the new film.

The report added that, 'Reese Witherspoon remainsaboard, reprising her role as attorney Elle Woods, producing through her Hello Sunshine studio with the franchise’s original producer Marc Platt.'

The original Legally Blonde film first graced our silver screens all the way back in 2001. With so many iconic scenes and a lead character everyone can relate to, it was a hit.

Elle proved to us all that femininity doesn't exclude anyone from being intelligent or ambitious. As a tenacious young graduate, she worked hard for a place at Harvard Law School. Initially, Elle had hoped to convince her ex-boyfriend Warner that she could be taken seriously.

But by the end, she’d proven to herself and the world could fight her corner along with the best of them.

With this empowering message and it’s host of memorable scenes, it’s no surprise that audiences quickly fell in love with this heroine.

Though a 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde failed to reach the same heights, the 2007 musical based on the film took Broadway by storm.

And now the news that Legally Blonde 3 is not so very far away is just what we need to brighten our 2020.
