Kate Garraway returns to GMB and reveals husband is ‘still fighting’

Kate Garraway has returned to host Good Morning Britain on ITV for the first time since releasing images of Derek Draper in hospital. 

During Thursday’s show, Kate Garraway joined Susanna Reid to host the breakfast show and opened up about her husband Derek's battle with coronavirus. Susanna asked Kate how she was doing and reminded her that many viewers had been following her journey and are eager to watch her new documentary that airs next week.

Kate replied that she thinks that this documentary will be a “moment” for everybody because of the COVID-19 anniversary in the UK. “I think it’s a moment for everybody when you suddenly realise it’s been a year that we’ve all been living with this,” she said.

She revealed that her documentary, Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, began filming in 2020.  “This is something that I began making back in August.” She continued to reveal that by March 2021 she had hoped that Derek would be further into his recovery. “Obviously back then rather hoping Derek and I would be chatting with you together with more recovery... that hasn't been the case,” she said. 

She continued to say that she hoped viewers wouldn’t be scared by what they see in the documentary. “Obviously Derek is an extreme example, we don't want to scare people with what he's been through but there are many other people that have got versions of it and still not enough is known about the impact of it,” she said.

Kate suggested that although her experience has been awful, she could be considered lucky as Derek is still alive, and many people have lost their lives to this virus. Kate said, “It's affected some people you could argue worse than Derek because people have lost their lives and he's still here fighting."

In the trailer for the new documentary, Kate Garraway revealed her fears that husband Derek Draper could be ‘locked in forever’ following his Covid-19 battle. Ahead of the documentary’s release, Kate has been incredibly open about her struggles. Only recently she revealed how the kindness of friend Emma Willis helped her through dark times during Christmas 2020.

Kate's documentary, 'Kate Garraway: Finding Derek' will be released on Tuesday 23rd March 2021 at 9 pm on ITV.
