Total Time 10 mins

If you’re throwing a dinner party this weekend and need a fishy starter that will get everyone’s taste buds going, why not try this delicious prawn cocktail recipe?

It’s such a classic starter option that it’s hard to go wrong with a good prawn cocktail recipe and we’ve used paprika, Tabasco, lemon juice and a dash of cognac to really liven up this recipe too.

As this recipe uses cooked prawns you can buy in a shop, it’s relatively quick to make as it’s just a case of mixing up the sauce. Plus, you’ll likely already have a lot of the ingredients in your cupboard too, so it’s not too expensive to throw together.

This recipe makes enough of this delicious starter dish to serve six people, so it’s a great cost effective way to feed a lot of mouths on a budget and not compromise on flavour.

Ingredients

  • 6 tsp mayonnaise
  • 5 tsp tomato ketchup
  • squeeze of lemon juice, plus lemon slices to serve
  • few shakes of Tabasco, to taste
  • ½ tsp paprika, plus extra to serve
  • 3 little gem lettuces, shredded
  • small cucumber, peeled and diced
  • 3 spring onions, finely chopped
  • 600g (1lb 50oz) cooked, peeled prawns

Method

  1. Mix the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, ketchup, lemon juice, Tabsaco, cognac and paprika in a bowl, season to taste and set aside.

  2. Divide the lettuce between 6 serving coupes then add a layer of the cucumber and spring onion to each. Top with the prawns then divide the sauce between each portion. Finish with a sprinkling of paprika, and serve with a slice of lemon, if you like.
