The Queen made an “enormous impression” on a fellow royal growing up and showed how being a ruling monarch was totally “worthwhile”.
- Opening up ahead of the Platinum Jubilee weekend, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark discussed how inspirational her fellow monarch was to her.
- Queen Margrethe explained that Queen Elizabeth showed her it “could be done” and that there’s one thing she does particularly “beautifully”.
- This royal news comes as it was revealed that some of the Queen's most iconic fashion looks are being honored in a very special way.
This year is a momentous one for royal fans as not only are the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 weekend approaching, but Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is also marking her Golden Jubilee. The two monarchs are currently the only reigning Queens in the world as well and it seems that it was Queen Elizabeth, who will soon join the extended Royal Family to celebrate her 70 year milestone, who showed the Danish Queen how “worthwhile” ruling could be despite its “demanding” nature.
Ahead of the bank holiday, Queen Margrethe spoke with ITV News Correspondent Lucy Watson about the “enormous impression” she had on her growing up and the skill she does “beautifully”.
Reflecting on the moment Queen Elizabeth’s reign began, Margrethe explained, “[She] was 26 when she became Queen. When I was growing up, I hoped I wouldn’t be as young as that when my father died. It made an enormous impression on me.”
She continued, “The fact that she was dedicating her life. I understood what that meant. This is for life. That is the whole point of my life. And I know she sees that too.”
In 2015, Queen Elizabeth surpassed Queen Victoria and made history when she became Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. And according to Queen Margrethe, her parents even advised her to look to her fellow Sovereign as a shining example.
“When I was growing up, my mother and father said to me, look at what they do in England and I could see that it could be done,” she explained, revealing that Elizabeth showed her “it was worthwhile and you could live a very full life with it, even with a heavy schedule and demanding job”.

Alongside her extensive royal responsibilities, Queen Elizabeth’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been seen to be immensely important to her and she’s maintained this careful balancing act between public and private life over the last seven decades.
"Both she and I see it as a dedication, but also a job,” Queen Margrethe said, before describing how drew inspiration from “[t]he way she has faced her duties, the way she has dedicated her life, and she does it with a smile. She has been through many things.”
Together both monarchs have collectively ruled for 120 years now and the Danish monarch believes there is one thing Britain’s sovereign does especially “beautifully”.
“Everything doesn’t have to be different all of the time. You belong to your country. You belong to a whole nation. That is one thing Queen Elizabeth does so beautifully,” she declared.
Queen Margrethe's wonderful remarks about Queen Elizabeth comes ahead of the Platinum Jubilee weekend as fans across the world begin to deck their halls with Jubilee decorations. Across four days, the packed schedule of events will pay tribute to Her Majesty's extraordinary milestone and all she's achieved over a reign that it seems has been an inspiration to not just fans, but to fellow monarchs.
