Earlier this week, the Duke of Cambridge announced the launch of the Earthshot prize, which they are said to hope to become the “Nobel Prize for environmentalism”.

Announcing the prize on the Kensington Palace Instagram account, the royal wrote, ‘Say hello to the incredible @EarthshotPrize Council!

‘Every year from 2021 until 2030, Prince William, alongside a panel of Prize Council Members covering six continents 🌍 will award The #EarthshotPrize to five winners 🏆 one per Earthshot, whose evidence-based solutions make the most progress towards these goals’.

And now former President Barack Obama has spoken out in support of the royal’s new project, writing on his Twitter account, ‘It’s going to take a lot of big-thinking and innovation to save the one planet we’ve got—and that’s why @KensingtonRoyal’s leadership on climate change can make a real difference’.

Appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme earlier this week alongside Sir David, Prince William spoke out about the new project, saying, “I feel right now it’s my responsibility”.

“We hope that this Earthshot Prize reaches everyone around the world,” the Duke of Cambridge went on.

“From communities, schools, right up to banks, governments, corporations – anyone and everyone is a part of this and anyone could find the solutions that we need.”

“There’s a lot of people wanting to do many good things in the environment and what they need is a bit of a catalyst,” he added, “a bit of hope, a bit of positivity that we can actually fix what’s being presented”.

“Suddenly we actually see the writing is on the wall,” added Sir David. “People can see it’s happening and it is a matter of great urgency now.”
