Prince Harry’s smoking habit stubbed out by super healthy Meghan Markle
Prince Harry gave up smoking for good after meeting Meghan Markle
Prince Harry's smoking habit was stubbed out by Meghan Markle, after decades of battling the unhealthy vice.
- Prince Harry's smoking history has become a hot topic in light of recent comments made by US news presenter Katie Couric.
- In her upcoming new book, Couric reveals Harry stunk of alcohol and cigarettes when she met him at a polo match in 2012.
- In other royal news, the Queen is to be rocked by more scandals as Princess Diana author announces 'intimate' new book.
Prince Harry’s smoking history has been relit following Katie Couric’s shocking claims that the young royal reeked of cigarettes and booze when they first met.
In her highly-anticipated upcoming memoir, Going There, the US news presenter shares a rather unflattering picture of the Duke of Sussex from her encounter with him at a polo match in Belize in 2012.
Couric recalls that Harry appeared to "ooze" alcohol and cigarettes from "every pore of his body" during their brief interaction, adding that he was going through his “wild oats sowing days” at the time.
The Duke has since admitted he struggled with substance abuse in his late 20s, drinking up to a "week’s worth of alcohol in one day" to cope with his anxiety and depression.
Smoking—another common tool for relieving stress—was also a bad habit of Harry’s during his youth. Having reportedly tried his first cigarette at boarding school, he quickly developed a nicotine addiction and continued to light up into adulthood. It’s even been said that he could go through a full packet of Marlboro Lights in one day at the height of his dependency—a vice that likely didn’t go down well with his non-smoking mother, the Queen.
Luckily for Harry, as well as those around him, it seems his smoking days have well and truly been extinguished. The introduction of a non-smoking policy at Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace in 2016 was likely a major contributor to his quitting, making it increasingly difficult for him to puff away without setting off the fire alarms.

The premature death of his grandaunt, Princess Margaret, was another possible factor in inspiring him to ditch the habit. The Queen’s younger sister died aged 71 from a stroke, after a lifetime of heavy smoking and drinking.
However, most royal experts believe that it was Harry's wife, Meghan Markle, who motivated him to permanently break up with the pricey tobacco sticks.
The American actress is reportedly a devout anti-smoker, having been raised by a super-fit yoga mom in health-conscious California. She eats a mostly clean diet, preferring vegan cuisine over meat-based dishes, and exercises regularly with treadmill workouts and pilates classes.
With such an emphasis on her wellbeing, it’s no surprise Meghan wouldn’t be a fan of her husband lighting up. The Suits star also wanted to start a family with Harry—a process that can often be negatively impacted by smoking. Harry officially curbed the habit for Meghan in 2017, two years before they welcomed their first child, Archie.
"Harry has promised no smoking at all at home. It's not nice for Meghan as a non-smoker," a friend close to the couple told the Daily Mail. "So there's no more hanging out of the window for a quick puff. Harry has quit for Meghan."
Now, instead of smoking, Harry uses alternative—and much healthier—tools to help him minimize stress. As well as following a whole foods diet, he has upped his workouts and attends regular therapy sessions.
