You’ll never guess how Kate Winslet’s daughter has hidden her connection to her mother

For children of celebrities, it’s hard not to feel overshadowed by your parent’s spotlight. For Kate Winslet’s daughter, that was her exact fear when she decided to give acting a shot.

What worked in her favor, though, was her last name. Mia Threapleton is the daughter of Kate and her ex-husband film director Jim Threapleton. While Kate has been spending more time working at home, Mia has been “flying under the radar” in Hollywood pursuing her acting career.

“She’s away just now in the Czech Republic about to start work on a little TV series over there,” Kate said during an appearance on the British TV host Lorraine Kelly’s show. 

“That’s been a wonderful thing that I think I knew was coming,” she added. “Actually, I think I always suspected. And then, sure enough, a couple of years ago, she turned around and said, ‘I think I’d like to give it a go.‘”

Kate gives credit to Mia‘s last name for allowing her to break into the industry without the pressure of a famous mom.

“What’s been really great for her is she has a different surname, so that initial job out of the gate, she slipped right under the radar,” Kate explained to Kelly. “And the people who cast her had absolutely no idea that she was my daughter.”

Mia scored her first acting job as the lead role in the 2020 thriller Shadows, and, according to Kate, the people who had cast her had no idea that Mia was her daughter. This was a relief to Kate, who also added that, for Mia, this was “most important for her self-esteem” as an incoming actress.

Mia certainly looks up to her mom but wants to make a name for herself as an actress. Along with Shadows, she was also in the 2014 film A Little Chaos.
