John Lewis and Waitrose have launched their first joint Christmas advert.
Every year we all eagerly await the John Lewis Christmas advert, which gives us the green light to get into the festive spirit.
The high-street department store sets the bar every year with their much-anticipated ad, managing to capture the sense of the special season come December.
And now, they’ve taken things a step further by teaming up with one of our favourite supermarkets, Waitrose. The two British icons, which are both part of the John Lewis Partnership, have unveiled their first joint Christmas advert.
Watch the John Lewis Christmas advert 2019 here!
Set to REO Speedwagon’s 'Can’t Fight This Feeling', re-recorded by Dan Smith from the band Bastille, the advert tells the story of adorable dragon Excitable Edgar who lives in a small village along with his best friend Ava.
Ava and Edgar join the rest of the village in preparing festivities in the run up to the big day, but Christmas fanatic Edgar uncontrollably breathes fire every time he gets excited.
This leads to him dissolving the other kids’ snowman when he goes to help with the carrot nose, melting the village ice skating rink when he zooms onto it, and obliterating the central Christmas tree at its lighting ceremony.
But after he shuts himself off from the rest of the village for his antics, best friend Ava brings him a gift to show him how much she cares about him – and it's a Christmas pudding, so that he can put his pyro abilities to good use and feel a whole lot better about himself.
It "ensures he plays a unique role in the spectacular village feast, lighting up Christmas in his own special way," say John Lewis and Waitrose.
Craig Inglis, Partner and Customer Director at John Lewis & Partners, said of the advert, “I’m delighted our two brands have come together for this year’s Christmas campaign.
“It started from a spark of an idea - a little dragon’s excitement about Christmas - and became the story of how someone goes the extra mile for their best friend to give just the right gift.
“It’s a funny, heart-warming story that will resonate with our customers as they seek out the perfect gifts for their loved ones this Christmas.”
Martin George, Partner and Customer Director at Waitrose & Partners, added, “The magic of friendship and making our loved ones feel special, are some of the most wonderful things about this time of year.
“The Christmas pudding in the final scene is not just the showpiece of a spectacular feast which brings all the villagers together. It’s a reminder that a thoughtful gesture - whether that’s a delicious meal or a special gift - can mean so much.”
If you want to catch the TV premiere of the sweet advert, it will first air this Saturday 16th November during ITV’s The X Factor: Celebrity.
This ad has certainly put us in the festive mood!
Aleesha is digital shopping writer at woman&home - so whether you're looking for beauty, fashion, health or home buys, she knows all the best places to splash your cash. She earned an MA in Magazine Journalism from City, University of London in 2017 after graduating from University of Leeds in 2014 with a BA in English and Spanish (which took her to Madrid for a fun Rioja and tapas-packed year). Aleesha has worked for woman&home since 2019, when she joined the team as their digital news writer. A year on the news team gained her quick and reactive writing skills and a love for breaking stories, invaluable insight into where to get the best lifestyle releases first, an AOP awards nomination and the nickname ‘crazy watch lady’ after she became so obsessed with the royals that she followed breaking news alerts on her Apple Watch.
Before joining the woman&home team, Aleesha wrote for their sister site GoodtoKnow, where she covered celebrity news, health advice and where to snap up the cheapest lifestyle buys. With a background in beauty, Aleesha has also written for Stylist and Women’s Health where she developed an understanding into what makes a stellar product and which brands are worth paying attention to. She never leaves the house without a slick of lip balm and a good slathering of SPF, cannot live without an eyelash curler by her side and is always on the hunt for new lipsticks to add to her ‘Lipstick of the Day’ Instagram story highlight (and color-coordinated collection).
But it’s not just beauty buys Aleesha can help you with. Social media savviness, strong PR relationships and a need to stay in the know mean she’s all about the latest fashions, clever gadgets and reliable lifestyle buys too. She loves indulging in an interior craze (with a bedroom drowned in prints, plants and pink), is a regular visitor to the Missoma and Edge of Ember 'New In' pages and can’t resist the allure of a kitchen gadget—just ask her three coffee machines.
When she’s not playing around with new products and testing anything she can get her hands on, Aleesha spends most of her time with her head in a current bestseller, catching up on the latest Netflix craze with her sister, trying out new recipes, drinking wine with her bestie and (in non-COVID times) has been known to be a bit of a jetsetter amongst her friendship group. Oh and she makes the most of her Disney+ subscription by watching the Marvel films on repeat (definitely not just for Chris Evans...).
