The first trailer for the much-anticipated new production has finally dropped and fans are getting even more excited about the release, which is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2022.
Who plays Whitney Houston in the new I Wanna Dance With Somebody biopic?
Written by Anthony McCarten, the mind behind the 2018 Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, and produced by Whitney's former record producer Clive Davis (more on him later), I Wanna Dance With Somebody stars the wonderful Naomi Ackie in the iconic singer's role. The 30-year-old British actor is known for her roles on Master of None, Star Wars and, believe it or not, an unaired Games of Thrones prequel pilot!
"[Whitney's] been elevated in my life for so long that it felt like an impossible thing to achieve at times," Naomi said to PEOPLE about taking on the iconic role. "But so many people told me the same thing: If I wasn't scared and nervous, they'd think something was wrong with me. ... The biggest challenge was letting my fear of the magnitude of this task take a back seat. Nothing good comes from sitting in fear for too long."
The cast is rounded out by the always-wonderful Stanley Tucci as Clive, Ashton Sanders as Whitney's ex-husband Bobby Brown, Tamara Tunie as Whitney's mother Cissy Houston and Clarke Peters as her father John Houston.
What is I Wanna Dance With Somebody about?
Whitney's own estate authorized the I Wanna Dance With Somebody biopic, so you can expect the production to be pretty true to reality. According to an official synopsis, the film tracks the late icon's "journey from obscurity to musical superstardom." The description specifically refers to Whitney as "the greatest female R&B pop vocalist of all time" and we absolutely cannot disagree with that.
When is I Wanna Dance With Somebody dropping?
The Whitney biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody will officially hit theaters on December 21, making it the ideal film to catch throughout the holiday season.
