A UK-based study led by Imperial College London and the UN International Agency for Research on Cancer found that those who drank coffee “were associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes, particularly from circulatory diseases and diseases related to the digestive tract”.
Dr Marc Gunter, who lead the UK study, said, “Importantly, these results were similar across all of the 10 European countries, with variable coffee drinking habits and customs. Our study also offers important insights into the possible mechanisms for the beneficial health effects of coffee.”
And just incase you were wondering if you had to go for a decaffeinated variety to get the benefits of coffee, the studies suggests it doesn’t matter. Lower mortality was present regardless of whether people drank regular or decaffeinated coffee.
Veronica Setiawan, the lead author of a similar US study, therefore suggests that the lower mortality rate is not linked to caffeine. Setiawan clarified: “We cannot say drinking coffee will prolong your life, but we see an association. If you like to drink coffee, drink up! If you’re not a coffee drinker, then you need to consider if you should start.”
Obviously, it goes without saying that the people who experienced a prolonged life over the 16 year period, could also be doing other important things to achieve the results they did. Binging on coffee can also pose other health risks if coupled with an unhealthy lifestyle!
