Why Mrs Hinch’s mattress cleaning hack isn’t worth trying, according to an expert
This handy cleaning hack might not work for everyone
Mrs Hinch’s mattress cleaning hack may be simple and effective for her home, but according to an expert, it may not work for everyone.
The cleaning star, whose real name is Sophie Hinchliffe, rose to fame after sharing her handy cleaning tips and stunning home interiors on Instagram. Now with people spending more time at home than ever before throughout the pandemic, many of us will have felt the need to give our house-turned-home-office a spring clean this year.
Everyone knows that it’s hard to beat the feeling of a clean mattress, bedding, and your best pillow when you settle down for a good night’s sleep. Despite this, whilst we might know how often to change our bedsheets, when it comes to how to clean a mattress, it’s a process many of us won’t even know where to start on.
And whilst Mrs Hinch’s mattress cleaning hack might just have made it seem that bit easier, an expert has suggested that it's worth approaching cautiously.
What is Mrs Hinch’s mattress cleaning hack?
Cleaning influencer Sophie Hinchliffe has previously taken to Instagram Stories to share her hack for keeping your mattress clean and smelling heavenly.
After first stripping the bedding off her bed, she sprinkled bicarbonate of soda, sometimes called baking soda, over the mattress.

"For those asking why I use bicarb and what does it do, it’s an odour eliminator," Mrs Hinch explained to her fans. "So any odours that may be lingering in the mattress, it just soaks them up and absorbs them. It works really, really well."

The bicarbonate of soda was left on the mattress for an hour before Mrs Hinch returned to vacuum it up.
For this, she used the cold setting on her hand-held vacuum cleaner.
Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?
What does an expert think of Mrs Hinch’s mattress cleaning hack?
It certainly sounds like Mrs Hinch’s mattress cleaning hack is the perfect time-saving way to freshen up your mattress. However, as reported by Ideal Home, according to Natalie Armstrong, a sleep expert at bed and mattress brand, Sealy UK, the bicarbonate of soda hack might not work for everyone.
“There’s an old wives’ tale that suggests that sprinkling baking soda onto the mattress, leaving it to air for a few hours, and then vacuuming it off, can help to air it out,” Natalie explained.
Though it seems like the success of this Mrs Hinch mattress hack very much depends on what mattress you own.
“[I]t’s worth noting that not all mattresses are suitable for this home remedy,” Natalie went on to share.

“Many modern mattresses, such as those that feature Purotex, naturally create a clean and healthy sleeping environment by releasing friendly bacteria into the mattress. Meaning one less cleaning job on your to-do list!”
So it seems like whilst Mrs Hinch’s mattress cleaning hack using this one simple product may work out well for some of you, it’s definitely worth checking your mattress label first.
After all, if you have a modern mattress, giving it a good vacuum on both sides at least every six months could be all it needs. But if you go have an older mattress, this simple cleaning hack may be worth a try.
