Look and feel great, no salon needed, with our top grooming tips

As life slowly returns to a new normal, here’s how you can emerge from lockdown looking lovely

Whether its meeting friends for a socially distanced drink at the pub, escaping the neighbourhood for a much-needed holiday or returning to the office for the first time in a long time, we all want to look our best.

But with salons only just opening and many clinics still closed, it’s going to be a tricky time trying to get an appointment for even the simplest of beauty treatments. But that’s ok, because whether your hair needs a freshen up, or you’re in desperate need of a manicure, we’ve enlisted the help of experts to get you looking great from head to toe, all from the comfort of your home.

Try a new colour

If you’re craving a fresh new look, there’s no need for costly and time-consuming salon sessions, Schwarzkopf Color Expert has the answer. All you need is a spare hour and a locked bathroom door. Offering a range of 16 different colours from natural blonde to rich brunette and deep red or black shades, Schwarzkopf Color Expert has something to suit everyone.

It’s also formulated with OMEGAPLEX Anti-Breakage Technology to help protect your hair from damage and Hyaluronic Acid to help hydrate and add a glossy finish. But remember, as with any home hair colour, “you must do the allergy alert test 48 hours in advance, following the instructions on the leaflet,” says Carolyn Newman, Schwarzkopf Color Expert Brand Ambassador.

Sort out your nails

Nothing looks more polished than a perfect set of manicured nails, but if you usually favour a salon mani, then trust us when we tell you it’s so easy to get them looking groomed at home. ‘I find nothing more soothing than filing and painting my nails,’ says Woman & Home Beauty Director, Sarah Cooper-White.

“And it’s so satisfying to admire your freshly painting nails afterwards. I clip mine first – just a few millimetres longer than the top of your finger looks so much more chic than long talons. Then gently file any sharp edges before applying a base coat, two coats of colour and topcoat for maximum longevity. My go-to colours are bright red, black or a neutral tone to match my skin – classic and stylish.”

Banish grey roots

Like a lot of us during recent months, fashion influencer Emily Jane Johnson has found the appearance of many new grey hairs. “Since I’ve jumped over the hill of 40 I’ve had to start battling the grey hair debacle,” she says. “Those grey and white hairs just like to come out of nowhere.”

The good news is, it’s so easy to cover those pesky silver strands without needing to set foot in a salon.

Emily uses Schwarzkopf Color Expert in shade 6.16 Light Cool Brown to cover hers; it delivers 100% grey coverage leaving natural looking, shiny colour and no grey! Emily has found that the best way to cover her greys is to start applying the colour to the first one to two inches of her roots first, leave that for twenty minutes and then apply colour to the lengths. And after rinsing out the colour, “my hair feels really healthy, stronger and looks so shiny, too,” she adds.

Get a glow

Had to cancel this year’s holiday, but still craving a summer glow? You don’t need a tanning bed or a professional spray tan to look and feel like you’ve had your two weeks in the Med. Just invest in a bottle of self tan and a mitt and spend some time mastering the art of a perfect faux glow at home.

“I love applying self-tan at night before I go to bed,” says Woman & Home Beauty Director, Charley Williams-Howitt. “That way you wake up in the morning looking healthy and gorgeous.”

Just don’t forget to depilate 24 hours beforehand so your tan develops evenly and “make sure you exfoliate any dry areas,” adds Charley. “Places like knees and elbows, can absorb more tan if they are dry and make your finished colour look less natural.”
