First Look: J.K.Rowling's new book, The Casual Vacancy
J.K. Rowling may be an established children's author, having sold around 450 million copies of her seven book, cult kids fantasy series, Harry Potter but now she's turning her pen to adult storytelling with the release of her first grown-up novel, The Casual Vacancy.
The book's publishers, Little Brown Book Group, have released few details about the new book - and the cover (above) gives little away - but The Casual Vacancy does sound very intriguing...
Set in the idyllic fictional town of Pagford, the close-knit community are shocked when much-loved parish councillor Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties. But, beneath the serene, happy facade, the chocolate-box town has been troubled for a long time. The rich are fighting the poor, teachers are at war with their pupils and wives are battling their husbands. Barry's death triggers the biggest conflict of all - a parish election frought with jealousy, passion and unexpected revelations.
Whether we'll see the frenzied bookshop queues a new installment of Harry Potter once caused when The Casual Vacancy is released on 27th September remains to be seen, but the book is already doing very well on pre-order. More than 2 million excited readers have apparently already requested their copy of the novel.
