Prince William and Kate Middleton have honored Prince Philip with a touching photograph of him from his military career on social media.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have posted a touching photograph in response to the news that Prince Philip has died aged 99. The late Duke of Edinburgh died at his beloved Windsor Castle, with his wife Queen Elizabeth II by his side.

The couple took to their Instagram to share a portrait of the late Duke of Edinburgh from his military years with their 12.2 million followers.

The black-and-white image, which depicts Prince Philip dressed in uniform, is a reminder to Britain of his longrunning career in the Royal Navy.

The duke joined the armed forces at the age of 18, graduating as a top cadet from the Britannia Royal Navy College. He went on to serve in World War II, during which time he became one of the youngest ever lieutenants at 21.

Prince Philip's naval career came to an end in 1951, but he remained involved in the armed forces.

After his departure from on-the-field military duties, he was appointed Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Cadet Force, and Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps.

In 1947, he married Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II. During the early stages of their marriage, the couple was based in Malta while Prince Philip served as Naval Officer on the island.

They went on to give birth to three children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.
