Prince Harry might be over 5,000 miles away from Buckingham Palace, but his influence on the Royal Family's politics appears stronger than ever.
The Duke of Sussex, who withdrew as a senior member of the Royal Family in early 2020 to move to the US with his wife, Meghan Markle, may inadvertently dictate the title of Camilla Parker Bowles after her husband becomes King.
The Duchess of Cornwall will receive a new official royal name when Prince Charles, the eldest of the Queen's children, ascends the throne—but what exactly it will be remains unknown.
The Prince of Wales would reportedly like Camilla to be referred to as Queen, rather than Princess Consort, but his decision is likely to be determined by the behavior of his younger son—as well as the content of the highly anticipated The Crown Season Five.
"Charles is so proud of her and so grateful to her and loves her so much that he would find it difficult to give her a lesser title," royal biographer Penny Junor told the Telegraph. "It would be demeaning. That said, public opinion will play its part, and if The Crown has just put out a new series that paints her in a bad light, or Prince Harry has just dropped some sort of bombshell, it could change things.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have caused quite the stir within the Royal Family since their high-profile departure last year, accusing the institution of racism and failing to adequately protect them from media scrutiny in their exclusive Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021.
The frenzy surrounding their allegations became so intense that Buckingham Palace was forced to issue a rare statement from the Queen, much to the surprise of royal fans. It was later revealed that Prince Harry is to release a memoir in 2022, which will detail the "experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him" over the last four years. If he discusses Camilla in a negative manner in the book, her potential title as Queen could be placed in jeopardy.
Surprisingly though, this majestic position isn't something the 74-year-old is desperate to reach. The Duchess of Cornwall is understood to be "dreading" the inevitable attention of being married to a King, having reportedly never felt entirely comfortable living in the public eye.
"She is a normal woman who, because of her relationship with Charles, has found herself in an abnormal situation," explains Juror.
“I don’t think titles do it for her, and the prospect of being Queen or Princess Consort, the fuss there will be at the time, the comparisons to Diana, it will be a very difficult time for her."
Camilla tied the knot with Prince Charles, the ex-husband of the late Princess Diana of Wales, in 2005, bringing an end to a scandalous love affair and extramarital relationship spanning several decades. She was given the title the Duchess of Cornwall, rather than the Princess of Wales, as a mark of respect to the beloved Lady Diana.
Since then, she's widely regarded as one of the hardest-working royals, carrying out public engagements both independently and with Prince Charles. Her latest duty has seen her join her husband for a tour of the Middle East, where she is currently meeting with both government officials and members of the public.
