This new Strictly Come Dancing rule could save the show from being axed due to covid-19

This year's series of Strictly Come Dancing could be saved by not signing up any celebrities over the age of 60.

The popular BBC show is under threat due to the coronavirus crisis, and BBC bosses are said to be considering various ways they can ensure it can still air in the autumn - including banning stars that are over 60 from taking part.

According to The Daily Star, an insider said the risk is simply too high due to the fact that older people are far more vulnerable to covid-19.

A source revealed, "The virus is far more dangerous for older people, so insurance companies have said it’s not possible to offer cover.

"The risk of them catching the virus and suffering severe health problems would be too big."

Despite the likes of Debbie McGee, Lesley Joseph and Gloria Hunniford having all proved popular on Strictly before - this year's line-up could be made up of significantly younger faces.

"It's simply not possible for the show to sign up any celebs from that age group."

It comes just weeks after reports emerged that stars of the show could be forced to isolate with their professional dance partner in a bid to minimise the risk of coronavirus spreading.

But former star of the show, Susanna Reid, expressed serious concerns about this plan.

Having starred on the show back in 2013 Susanna knows first-hand what being part of Strictly Come Dancing involves.

The Good Morning Britain star said, “No parent of young children will want to spend that much time away from home.

“And husbands and wives will baulk at being apart for so long.”

Although Susanna split with her husband of 15 years shortly after appearing on the show, Susanna, 49, denies it was as a result of the Strictly curse.

But, according to the Daily Star, she does think putting dancers and celebs in isolation together will “give rise to plenty of gossip”.

Reflecting on her own experience of the show and the subsequent breakdown of her relationship, Susanna said, “I call it the Strictly coincidence.”

Speaking on Loose Women last year, she added, “Kevin and I got on like a house on fire and Strictly was not responsible for the break up of my relationship."
