The coronavirus pandemic has seen shops close their doors, in order to stop the spread of the virus.
However, it seems garden centres will be reopening as early as next week, according to new plans set out by the government.
A senior government source told the BBC (opens in new tab) centres can reopen from Wednesday - if they comply with social distancing, that is.
In his speech to the nation tomorrow evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce that garden centres will be allowed to open their doors to customers from Wednesday 13th May.
But nursey bosses will have to ensure that customers stick to social distancing guidelines and that safety measures are put in place - such as screens or floor markings - to protect visitors and staff.
Any cafes or playgrounds associated with the space will not be able to reopen - as these are likely to be hotspots for social contact.
According to the BBC (opens in new tab), the senior government source said, ‘Garden centres typically open large open-air spaces where the risk of transmission of coronavirus is lower.
‘With strict social distancing measures in place we believe they can open safely from next week.’
The news follows an announcement by the Welsh government that garden centres will be able to open from Monday.
Wales' First Minister, Mark Drakeford, announced ‘modest’ changes to the lockdown on Friday - including that people will be allowed to exercise more than once a day.
The Welsh Labour leader added that councils could plan to reopen recycling centres – a measure which was already recommended to English local authorities by communities secretary Robert Jenrick.
The reopening of garden centres will be part of the government's slow loosening of the national lockdown, over the coming weeks.
