Desperate times call for desperate measures. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, the manager of a baseball team on a losing streak, who defies convention in a last-ditch attempt for a taste of success. With a limited budget to buy some headline-grabbing players, he hires a Yale-educated economist to help him scout out athletes undervalued because of their age or extra-curricular activities. Standing firm when faced with opposition from colleagues – Philip Seymour Hoffman also stars – the sums soon add up and the team goes on to win an unprecedented 20 games.
Nominated for six Academy Awards, the all-star cast expertly plays out this inspirational tale of faith and innovation in a fantastic screenplay from Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) and Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network).
