It’s not all romance for the Royals this Valentine’s Day! Saying that, the Duchess of Cambridge’s official duties today do still seem quite fun. Dressed in a holiday-appropriate red hue, Catherine kicked off her Valentine’s Day at RAF Wittering where she visited the air cadets from the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Air Training Corp, who are spending their half term holidays on the base’s skills development camp.
The Duchess is a royal patron and Honorary Air Commandant of the RAF Air Cadets – a role held, until recently, by the Duke of Edinburgh – and came to see how some of the UK’s 42,000 air cadets were spending their school break. During the visit she joined the cadets to view a Tutor aircraft, and also took the controls of a flight simulator.
It might not be the kind of jetsetting that we dream of being whisked away on on the annual day of romance, but the Duchess looked relaxed in her red Philosphy Di Lorenzo Serafini jacket, which she paired with a black polo neck, skinny jeans and a pair of her favourite boots.
At the other end of the spectrum from the Alexander McQueen gown that the Duchess wore to the BAFTAs earlier this week, the smart-casual red-and-black outfit drew a striking resemblance to the late Princess Diana’s wardrobe. It’s not the first time that the Duchess’ stylists team have drawn upon Diana’s style wins over the years – perhaps to draw parallels with her late mother-in-law’s status as a down-to-earth People’s Princess.
Princess Diana is bound to be in the thoughts of the Royals this year, which marks 20 years since her death in Paris. This is something that will, no doubt be at the forefront of the Princes’ minds, especially as William and Catherine are due to make their first official visit to Paris in March this year.
