  • He’s been a regular on Strictly Come Dancing since the popular TV programme began in 2004, and has since become a pillar of the BBC dance show, winning fans hearts with his exacting dance moves and charming personality.

But could a recent near-death experience mean that Brendan Cole might not be making a return to the 15th series of the show this year?

The professional dancer has revealed that he recently fell 40ft down a ladder – while holding a chainsaw! – after attempting to cut down a tree in his Mallorca home that had become infested with caterpillars.

Speaking to The Sun, he said, “I hit the floor with a thud and I checked I was still alive.

“I have hurt my leg. I am serious. I fell off a ladder. I was chopping a tree down with a chainsaw as it had caterpillars in. It was awkward. I came down with quite a thud. It did hurt. I was wounded for a while.

He continued, “It was my first time up a ladder. It was a brand new 13m ladder. There was just a Spanish guy saying ‘Are you OK, are you OK?'”

Phew – sounds like Brendan had a lucky escape this time round! And although he hasn’t confirmed whether or not his leg has completely healed, it seems like Brendan will make a recovery in time for the September debut of Strictly, and no announcement has been made otherwise.

Brendan has been winning over judges and fans alike for over 13 years on the show now, and has danced with the likes of Victoria Pendleton and Anastacia during his time as a professional dancer. So the claims that he was one of the hot favourites to take over Len Goodman’s role as Head Judge seemed pretty solid.

But given the announcement that it would instead be Shirley Ballas who would take over the position, Brendan has also spoken about his disappointment at losing out.

He admitted that he was really hoping to get the role, saying, “I was hoping for myself but never mind. Poor Anton (Du Beke) and poor me but the show must go on. Shirley was in a good position to get the job so she is going to make the show interesting.

“The BBC have the say and they have gone for Shirley. I had a screen test for the role and so did Anton. It was really nice to be involved in the process with the hope that it might be me but it wasn’t.”

Judge Darcey Bussell has also recently praised Shirley and mentioned how excited she is for another girl to join the show’s panel, saying “I don’t know Shirley Ballas but I am very excited to meet her and I am very supportive that there is another lady on the panel.

“I don’t think there was anything wrong with the dynamic before but it would be very nice to have another lady alongside me and I feel very lucky.”
