The acclaimed Australian actor is perhaps best known for his roles in classic films Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and L.A. Confidential. Throughout his time entertaining viewers across the world on-screen, he has amassed thousands of devoted fans. Writing on Twitter, Russell revealed that his beloved father John has passed away.

‘I arrived back in the bush last night. Today, although the sun is shining and the torrential rain has abated, this date will forever be tinged with sadness.

‘My dear old man, my beautiful dad, the most gentle of men, has passed away’ he said.

Russell then opened up on his reasons for sharing such deeply personal news so publicly and spoke of how his wonderful father had such a positive impact on so many people’s lives.

He explained: ‘I’m posting this because I know there are people all over the world who’s heart he touched and who’s ribs he tickled with his sparkly eyes and his cheeky attitude to everyone, and everything, and this is probably as efficient a method as any to pass on the news.
