Strictly Come Dancing 2022's first contestant has finally been revealed, much to the delight of the show's adoring fanbase.

Will Mellor is 'chuffed' to join the cast of the BBC dance competition's 20th series, calling it a 'huge challenge' that's 'completely out of my comfort zone.'

The English actor, who's best known for his role in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, confirmed the exciting news in a statement on Wednesday. He will start filming for the pre-recorded Strictly Come Dancing 2022 next month alongside a mysterious line-up of TBA celebrities.

"I'm honestly so chuffed to be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this year!" Will said. "Not going to lie, it’s totally out of my comfort zone and I know it will be a huge challenge but that’s what life is all about."

The 46-year-old's message also made a touching nod to his mother, Shirley, who has long been a huge fan of the show.

"She’s had a really tough few years so I’m doing this for her as well," he said. "Bring it on!"

Will further discussed his motivation to compete for that coveted Glitterball trophy on BBC Breakfast this morning (Thursday, August 4), admitting he had a mental reset after the death of his father, Bill.

"My mindset completely changed a while back and I wanted to start doing things that scare me a bit," he told hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt. "I lost my dad in 2020 and I just thought, I’ve got to grab life and do things, create new memories. My mindset changed. It’s my mum’s favorite show!"

Fans were quick to react to Will's addition to the reality show on social media, with many taking to Twitter to share their thoughts.

"Yipppeee! That’s a great coup to start us off with as well!" one delighted Strictly viewer said.

"What a great first celeb!!" another person commented.
