Why you can trust Woman & Home
It can’t just be me: everyone is talking about the Shark ChillPill. From Aryna Sabalenka’s “chill pill moment” courtside to Justin Bieber’s limited-edition collaboration, this cool (no pun intended) gadget is everywhere. But beyond the celebrity endorsements, I’ve noticed it in the wild too. From commuters cooling off on the tube, beachgoers misting themselves in the sun, and general summer survival mode on full display, it seems like the ChillPill covers every eventuality. Inevitably, I took its ubiquity as a sign that it was time to properly test the Shark ChillPill for myself.
At around £130, the Shark ChillPill sits firmly in premium portable fan territory, especially when you compare it to £20 Amazon alternatives and Dyson’s £99 HushJet Mini. But after testing all three through heatwaves, commutes, and trips abroad, I can say the ChillPill doesn’t just sit at the pricier end of the scale, it earns its place as one of the best cooling fans you can buy. It feels more capable than cheaper options, more versatile than anything else on the market, and much more refined.
With chilled contact plates designed for pulse points, a light misting function, and an ultra-quiet fan, it’s built to tackle heat in multiple ways rather than relying on airflow alone. In use, it’s also a real conversation starter I’ve lost count of how many curious questions it’s prompted from strangers while using it in public. Now, let's answer yours.

What is the Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 Fan, Mist & InstaChill System?
The first question to answer is: what exactly is the Shark ChillPill? At its core, it’s a portable handheld cooling device designed around the idea of personal temperature control on the go. It fits in the palm of your hand, runs on a rechargeable battery, and features a fan with multiple speed settings — up to 10 levels of airflow depending on how intense you want the cooling effect to be.
Where it starts to move beyond a standard portable fan is in its attachments. Swap the head unit and it becomes a light misting device, delivering a fine, cool spray that’s designed for instant relief in extreme heat. There’s also a chilled metal plate attachment, which rapidly cools down and can be applied directly to pulse points such as the wrists, neck, or temples. It’s a more targeted approach to cooling, rather than relying on airflow alone.
The Shark ChillPill is versatile enough to meet whatever the situation demands: a gentle fan on a commute, a misting burst on a sweltering train platform, or the cooling plate during a hot flush or heat spike. It’s a small device, but one that’s designed to tackle heat from multiple angles at once.

Who would the Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 Fan, Mist & InstaChill System suit?
The Shark ChillPill, as the full name suggests, is so much more than a fan. The 3-in-1 system covers fans, misting, and instantly cold plates, which makes this a fan that's more useful than your Amazon basics. It’s designed for anyone dealing with genuinely uncomfortable heat rather than just the occasional warm commute. If you’re someone who runs hot in summer, experiences hot flushes, or finds packed transport, festivals, and holidays difficult in high temperatures, the added misting and instant-cooling plate make it feel much more like a personal cooling system than a simple fan.
It’s also a strong fit for people who like multifunction gadgets and don’t mind paying a premium for versatility. Travellers, commuters, and beach-goers will get the most out of it, especially when heat levels shift throughout the day and you need different types of cooling on demand. That said, it’s less suited to occasional users who only want a light breeze now and then. In that case, a cheaper handheld fan would likely do the job just fine.
What is the Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 Fan, Mist & InstaChill System like to use?
I’ve had the absolute joy of testing the Shark ChillPill, and it has, without question, been the most impressive portable cooling device I’ve used. The compact unit sits comfortably in the hand, even with smaller hands like mine, and feels well-balanced in use, with a reassuring weight that ensures the ChillPill feels premium
The design is split into two clear zones: one end accepts the interchangeable cooling attachments, while the other houses a simple rotary dial that controls both fan speed and cooling intensity depending on the mode selected. It’s really intuitive, which means you don't need to worry about menus or apps, just a tactile twist control that immediately adjusts output. On fan mode, increasing the dial ramps airflow from a light, background breeze to a noticeably powerful jet of air. Importantly, even at higher settings, it remains significantly quieter than most handheld fans I’ve tested, to the point where I’ve comfortably used it on trains and in quieter public spaces without feeling self-conscious.
Battery performance is where the ChillPill really deserves a special mention, especially in comparison to other premium portable fans. I ran it continuously on a full 11-hour train journey, alternating between fan and misting modes, and it still had charge left at the end of the trip. That level of endurance makes it less of a handheld accessory and more like a all-day cooling too and a handbag essential. If I needed it hands free, the two elements can twist into completely customisable positions that let it sit at any angle. I also regularly take it to tennis sessions, where it’s become something of a running joke. My coach has since bought one after repeatedly borrowing mine and seeing Sablenka using hers
The misting function is the most attention-grabbing mode in public and it's also the one that I've had the most questions about. It mists a fine, controlled spray rather than heavy droplets, and output can be adjusted so it feels like a cooling veil rather than anything wet or messy. It does require a small water reservoir to be filled, but in practice I found one fill lasted far longer than expected, with refills needed more for hygiene than capacity. It performs best in dry heat, where it provides immediate evaporative relief without leaving the skin damp. I’ve used it extensively abroad and even during airport delays, where it made long waits more tolerable.
The chilled plate attachment is the most technically interesting element, even if it gets less attention. Inspired by Shark’s beauty-tech cooling systems, it rapidly drops in temperature on activation and maintains a consistent chill that can feel almost startling on first contact. Applied to pulse points, wrists, neck, or temples, it delivers a measurable sense of relief rather than just a sensation of cool air. It can also be used more cosmetically under the eyes or on flushed skin, where the cooling response is immediate thanks to the metal’s rapid thermal transfer. In testing, it became the feature I reached for most when overheated, particularly during outdoor sport.

How does the Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 Fan, Mist & InstaChill System compare?
The most obvious comparison is between the Dyson HushJet Cool Mini Fan. Compared to the Dyson, the Shark ChillPill feels like a more advanced,ofeature-rich device. The Dyson is a slim, elegantly simple portable fan that sits at a slightly lower price point, and it does that core job well, delivering consistent, portable airflow in a clean, premium package.
However, in day-to-day use, I’d personally stretch the extra £30 for the Shark. It feels more fully realised as a cooling system: the airflow is more customisable, the operation is quieter in practice, and the overall experience is more versatile thanks to its multiple modes and attachments. While the Dyson excels as a straightforward, no-fuss option, the Shark offers noticeably more functionality and a more premium-feeling performance across different real-world scenarios.
Which Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 Fan accessories should I get?
Some of the coolest (no pun intended) accessories come separately to the Shark ChillPill. I don't own any, but I'm prepping myself to make an investment, since it would be really handy to have a wrist strap or travel case. There are more Shark ChillPill accessories on their site, but these are the ones on my wish list:
Should you buy the Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 Fan, Mist & InstaChill System?
After testing the Shark ChillPill against other premium portable fans, across heatwaves, commutes, travel, and time at home, it’s clear that the ChillPill is something really special. I love the three-pronged attack to any heat, especially because it's not gimmicky. Add in its stronger customisation, quieter operation, and impressive battery life, and this works hard to earn its place as a handbag essential. I know, it's not cheap, but if you can find a saving, or spare the cash, the Shark ChillPill is the fan you'll reach for all summer long.
